Serious help needed!!! My 59 f100 stalled out on me and I cannot figure out what the problem is. I have fuel coming in so i started checking the electrical stuff out. I ended up replacing the coil, plugs and wires along with a electrical point replacement upgrade and still it wont start. I got a faint spark when the old points were installed and i checked everything with a test light. I have power coming in to the resistor, distributor, and the coil, yet no power coming out of the coil. I had a mechanic buddy take a look at it and he said that everything I did should have made it work... unless there is something more to it... The truck will turn over but no spark. I need help like somthing fierce.
Take a look at the wire that goes underneath the advance plate that comes up to the points from the coil, it can short under that plate. Better take a couple of deep breaths too, I think your starting to hyperventilate!
Just getting aggrivated. I live on an island, but a vehicle is nice to have. Ill give it a look and check. Thank you for the advice. Hopefully it works.
Also try replacing that wire from the distributor to the coil that OF1 mentioned. They have been known to frequently break right where it enters the distributor. Looks fine but strands inside are broken. If that wire is broken or shorted the coil will not fire.
The above described problem happened in both my F-2 and panel truck. The first time is was a stumper but the second time it was the first thing I checked. Both times the trucks ran fine one minute and dead the next.
Note also that about half the new coils they sell are bad right off the bat. They are oil filled and cheeply built.
I would buy a solid core "Flame Thrower" coil.
I had the same type of problem except the truck would start and then die when it warmed up. The guy at San Diego Carburetor tested my coil and told me it was bad. When I told him it was "brand new" I got the "I've been doing this for 40 years [you stupid girl]"....lecture. But he was right. So, passing that on for thought.
