well well well i havent drove my truck in a couple weeks.. took it for a spin tonigh and it runs and drives great, pleanty of power, 84 6.9 non turbo diesel in my 75 ford crew cab.. but at idle once in a while it will rev up now.. i wonder if this could be a indication of bad diesel, or maybe water in the diesel? i have no water seperator on this truck, and havent had one in years.. i did change my fuel filter last month..
anyone ever experiance a reving up and back to idle while in neutral and at stop lights? it did it a few times in a row at a couple stops.. it like somone is reving it up fo ra second then lets off.. the operating temp was up to about 200F during the time i drove it tonight, and that seems to be normal for this truck
My first two thoughs are either air intrusion or the IP govenor sticking a little.
How well did it start?
If it fired right up and did not die very shortly after that, you can probably rule out air intrusion.
So that would leave a drain the filter and fill it with Diesel Kleen, then start the engine and shut it off after 10 seconds and let it sit for a couple hours before restarting to clean out and lube the IP internal linkages.

fires up like a champ everytime, it has never died on me, and i replaced all the rubber lines last year with one of them kits with the injector caps and hose and orings and such..
I will pull the fram filter off.. and put another new one on full of diesel kleen.. liek you suggest..
