Other than my thermostat sticking, what else can make an engine run cool?
I changed my heater core the other day and now my engine runs cool.
This morning my truck got up to operating temperature and was blowing nice warm air.
This evening my truck never got up operating temp and it was blowing cooler air than this morning. (it did this the days ago as well)
I don't think my gauge is faulty. Sometimes it runs cool, other times right where it should it. Think my thermostat is starting to go? I'm gonna get a replacement tomorrow afternoon before I have to drive the truck again on Friday.
maybe the new heater core just works really, really well and you'll need to replace your thermostat with one that has a higher temp rating for the winter?
other than that, all i can think is timing too advanced; but i think that would be more predictable- slightly low, all the time. i'm still learning about timing, though, so don't count on my thoughts alone.
The stock electrical gauge is useless. It's not meant for quantitative diagnosis; it's simply meant as a go/no-go warning tool. To truly diagnose this problem, you need to install an aftermarket mechanical gauge that actually displays the temperature of the coolant (in numbers). You can't use terms like "in between the O and the R in 'NORMAL'" to diagnose a temperature problem.
How far do you drive to get the engine up to operating temps? If it is simply taking longer for this to occur, it may indicate a t-stat that will not close all the way, and the liquid cant reach operating temps during the short time you are driving.
If it sits and idles, will it come up to temp and blow hot air?
I too believe that this is t-stat related, but you will have to know just how hot the engine is actually getting to diagnose further.
Is it just me or are aftermarket thermostats not as good as they used to be?!?!
I replaced the OEM one in my Aerostar about a year ago and I just had to change it again about a month ago. I've actaully never seen one that was stuck like that one was stuck. I've only replaced them till now as a precautionary measure.
Are these trucks tricky to get coolant into the heater core? My Aerostar is. I have to jack the front of it up as high as I can to get the HC to fill.

There is definately a quality control problem with parts store t-stats.
I had a 195 t-stat in my truck barely last 3 weeks before it gave up. The one in my truck now has gone bad, almost made it a year with this one... so it will be 3 t-stats in about a year for me, with barely 5000 miles in that time.
I've never had a problem with filling the system on the Truck. Just drained it to do whatever, then re-filled as much as I could, start the engine and let it get hot, then top off. Might have to top off once a little later, but that is basically it.
