I am looking at buying a Expedition(2000-2002) Eddie Bauer edition. I have seen everywhere pretty cheap so I was wondering what is everyone honest opinion on them. I want to find one that isn't beat up and fully loaded. Thanks.
You're better off with an 01 or an 02 because 2000 was the last year of the problematic heads where spark plugs would blow out of them. Plus I believe it was in 2001 that Ford put 2H back on the 4WD selector switch, and having that position helps with the gas mileage.
How does the 2H position on the switch help gas milage over the A4WD position? Did Ford add the front axle disconnect from the F150s at the same time? If they didn't, and the only difference is the switch, which I believe to be the case, then you are still always turning the front drivetrain.
In addition, I drive a 99 F150 4x4 ext cab long box with the same 5.4 and 3.55 rear as my Expy, and it gets the same, or slightly worse mpg in 2H than the Expy in A4WD.
I dont think there is a tangible difference in mpg.
How does the 2H position on the switch help gas mileage over the A4WD position?
Models with the 2H position have a vacuum actuator on the front differential that disconnects the axle from the ring gear. So when you're in 2H you're still turning the front axle, but you're not turning the front differential or drive shaft.
That is how the F150 works. My first hand experience is that the F150 doesnt do any better on fuel than the Expy where the front axles turn all of the time.
Just so somebody doesn't show up with expectations.
I have a 99 EB and love it. Bought it with 117k, now has 124k a year later. My 4th Expy, first 5.4. I have had good luck with all of mine, I really dont think you can go wrong with these year models
I really leaning towards buying one. I haven't got too much negative feedback. There are a few that I have found that are in good shape with decent miles for cheap.
