Gentlemen, I am building a low budject 1955 f-100 with a volare front end I will be putting a tilt wheel and I need to know if anyone has used a tilt wheel with its original wiring harness from the donor vehicle I would also be useing motor and trans from same donor vehicle most likely early 351c,351w Thank, Michael
Since the 1955 F100 was 6V +ground, and almost all donor vehicles with a tilt wheel and 351 would be 12V - ground, using the wiring harness from the donor would require converting the truck to 12V - ground. I think trying to use an OEM wiring harness out of the donor vehicle would be an excercise in frustration unless you were very versed in auto electrical work. I assume that isn't the case or you likely wouldn't be asking. I would highly recommend using an aftermarket harness and fuse panel from a company like EZ Wire or It's a Snap. Their harnesses are very good, easy to use, and much more realistically priced compared to the more heavily advertised manufacturers. They come with all the wires and connectors for use with a gm or aftermarket tilt column, and instructions on use with matching to a Ford column. I think you are going to find it difficult to get everything, your desired engine/tranny and useable tilt column from a single donor, Ford just didn't make many vehicles with that combo. Sedan columns are not easy to use since they include a lot of extra brackets and jacketing and are typically too short. You would likely need something out of a pickup or van.
If you can let me know what year and make car/truck you are getting the steerring column from, I'll see if I can't find a wiring diagram and incorporate it into some that I already have, so you will have a flow chart. The earlier the steering column the better (wiring wise)
