carburetor

hey guys thank again for all the input on the shifting issue awhile back. for the update i did in fact install a floor shifter and yes has a few kinks but is getting the job done.

so my next issue is now with the carb. i was wondering if anyone had a diagram or walk thru for the stock carburetor. tonight i was finally able to drive my 65 custom cab home. everything was going good with minor issues. first the top butterfly keeps getting tuck and i wanted to know the remedy to get it to properly work. i can assume that it is mainly for the choke (i'm not to experienced with carbs so bare with me please :] ). also to top that the bar the hooks on at top of it i noticed that it was snapped off from the whole butterfly assembly. so i asked my friend about what he did exactly with the whole carb assembly. it seems he just took it off to clean it . so i was wondering if connected everything right. so to the second problem. as im driving i had to ease the throttle almost to the point of barely touching it because if i applied too much pressure the engine would just die. while this is going on i keep hearing a large popping sound ( like a lid of a pot blowing off from pressure), which i honestly feelits that top butterfly shutter.

can someone please help. would even buying a new carburetor be in order. if so where can i find a stock one ( not really looking for preformance). after driving this truck i feel i've found a new love and appreciation for this truck. and if anyone can help me understand this truck more it would be appreciated.
the most i can tell you its a 1965 f100 custom cab, automatic, with the 352 block ( so i've been told).

thank you again

oh to finish tonights adventure..... i ws going up a hill about a mile up from house and i hit the gut wrenching redlight. i begin to go and the engine died again. lucky for good friends with AAA right .

I have a 2100 carb, manual choke, rebuilt last week. It has been tested on my 292 and works great, and is available. PM me.

If the truck has been setting for any length of time may try removing and cleaning with aerosol can of carb cleaner, inside and out, install and squirt couple shots in the inlet while it's running.

Posting couple links in event decide on a 'do it yourselfer'. Not familiar with the 2100 series but recently rebuild couple holleys. Found it best to designate a work area for the rebuild and make sure area is clean. I dissassemble and removed all components that could be damage by soaking in carb cleaner and let set overnight. If digital camera available may want to take couple pic's during disaasembly. When assembling, use air to clean out passages, be carefull don't want to launch a needle valve, spring, etc. If compressor is not available a can of compressed air, type used for cleaning computers, should work. Can't emphasis enough keeping area clean. Finally, compare price of rebuild kit, skill level to that of purchasing a rebuild.

A good local independent supplier, NAPA or Carquest should be able to fix you up. Last one cost me $28.

thanks again

hey guys thanks for all the input. so i did the rebuild i realized something. the screw the screws down the venturas, if im not mistaken, has a type of weight that goes in after you drop the metal ball in. well i checked and i was wondering what exactly does it do and i'm assuming the last owner didnt put it in. is there anywhere i can get a new one or find something that works the same? if not im still on the search for a new carburetor if anyone is getting rid one.

i went with napa today... 22 bucks...

and for a previous post the OP posted, it may be tricky to just order a stock carb through napa... i checked with them today... 260 dollars and 2 week wait... they couldnt find anything in their system for a 2100... (might check on a newer ford like bill said earlier i think 74 f-100) but they said they had to order it from a different company... so i will just rebuild it...

I dont know exactly what it does, but I have one for a 1.02 venturi and a 1.14 venturi 2100. It may put resistance on the ball so that emulsion tubes dont dump excess gas. Both weights are very similar but not exactly the same. PM me.

Glad to hear you are doing it yourself. I watched my retired mechanic friend from beginning to end and he took 2 hours, with a labor charge of $40. Carb looked close to new and worked great. I am waiting for a 1.21 Mercury carb to arrive so I can start on it. Figure it will take 3 hours to do and I should be making close to 15.00 and hour.

Ebay has a lot of sellers of rebuilt 2100s. They are generally very good. Prices run from 120.00 to 160.00. Make sure you get the same size carb the truck came with, as they ranged from .098 venturi's all the way to 1.23. The FTE forum on carbs and FI has a sticky at top listing the sizes and their CFMs.

IMO, before spending 120-160 bucks for a rebuilt carb...that may not be worth 10 cents, call the sources I listed in post #12 to see what their asking price is for the BRAND NEW Genuine Ford carburetor.

Since the carburetor is obsolete, it can no longer be returned to Ford...which means the Dealers are STUCK with it.

It is always good to have options . IMHO, stay away from Pony Carbs. Their $450 price for a rebuild is rediculous.
