cable actuated throttle

I've been looking for a way to put a cable actuated throttle in my highboy, because frankly the solid linkage makes me nervous, and with the big azz Stealth intake I put on it, it wasn't able to fully open my carb anyway. I actually lost a ton of power with all the changes I made recently because of that!

I think I found a good cable setup from the ever great fox chassis. I used the gas peddle, cable and throttle bracket from a fox parts car I have setting out back. It seems to be perfect, and it's a VERY! easy install. My son actually did most of the work and layout, with my guidance. Drill five holes in the right places, bolt on the bracket, peddle and cable and you're good to go! The firewall end of the cable winds up about 2 inches above the valve cover. (On my Stealth, I had to space the bracket up about a half inch to get good geometry.)

The stuff I used is actually from a fuelie Mark VII but it's probably best to get the cable from a carbed car or CFI car because there's a big loop in my cable because its about a foot and a half too long. It works good but I'm particular about keeping mechanical things "just so". I'll be looking for a shorter cable promptly.

Sorry no pics, my camera is on the fritz still.

I applaud the creative aspect of this, but was there any reason why a 79 F series pedal and cable assembly was not used? I run this on my crew cab with a 521 and a siimilar intake. No geometry problems, and it bolts right in. Full throttle is still achieved.

This explains it. Finding a setup. There are very few vehicles older then about 1990 in the scrap yards around here anymore. I had this stuff in my own yard. I'm not paying through the nose unless I have to. nuff said.

I need more than the cable Bill, if I were to use the truck stuff.

And i'm not sure why my setup doesn't work and yours do but it just doesn't.

Ed got a pic of your throttlle linkage? if i understand it right, the peddle assembly is very similar to the solid linkage.

Imout of town right now, but I will snap a pic for you when I return. I run an air gap intake and a 1 inch spacer with a stock cable for a 79 truck with a 460. Works just fine. Now, once upon a time I recal having a similar problem, but I believe that it was because of a bracket for the cruise control getting in the way. I cut the pedal on the engine side of the firewall, and installed a piece that extended the lever. Then I attached the factory cable, and viola, it looked factory, no drilling, and again, no clearace issues. I know the problem you are having is the angle of the cabe, and it tends to bind against the back side of the intake. Perhaps the stealth intake has a different shape in the area where the cable goes through.
Either way, I do believe that using what you have is a reasonable alternative. I am a firm believer in this.
As long as we are sharing ideas, I do recal using a chebby cable. This eliminated the pass through style lever assembly, but allowed me to still use the factory pedal. I like the stock look and that pedal is important to me.
Anyway I took the end of an a donor pedal from a late model chebby vehicle, as well as the cable. I had to use the bracket that attaches to the intake and fashion a mehod of using this. Fortunately, the aftermarket is littered with brackets that mount to the carb for chebby cables, so this was a small investment. Ok, so I welded the linkage to the existing pedal assembly and cut away the rest.
Here is a poor pic of the cabe as it enters the firewall. This has enough slack to run just about anywhere, and has been trouble free for years.
heak, I forgot about this one:

Hmm. Weird. Here is my experience, its somewhat opposite. My dad did a 429 swap on his 1979 F-250 full time in 83 or 84. He ran the stock cast iron 4 barrel intake from the 429 and a Holley 600. The gas pedal is a lot higher than stock and when you depress it to full throttle the pedal is probably 2 inches from the floor, it's kinda of annoying to drive until you get used to it and you have to make sure you dont stomp the pedal to the floor because it won't make it that far!

Now on my 1977 I swapped to a 460 with Edelbrock RPM air gap and a 750 cfm Demon carb. My truck has linkage and not a cable. When I hooked it all up my pedal was way up in the air just like my dads. Since the linkage has adjustment I just adjusted the pedal down. Now works just like stock. I told my dad about it and he told me to keep an eye out for the parts to convert his 1979 from cable to linkage! Anyone have any comments on this? I don't think I'm crazy! haha.

Yeah that's what the stealth does, it hits the runner, or the firewall depending on which way I adjust the rod. My motor is also setting very high relative to yours is I do believe, which doesn't help. The low profile stocker barely made full throttle. There's a very small window of adjustment in my setup, and the Stealth went right through the wall.

I may have one of those peddles, but I swear it looked like the cable end of it went through the firewall like the solid rod peddle does. Maybe I'm mistaken!

I would have prefered an original 79 cable linkage but I'm happy with this solution.

Dont let me confuse this issue. The pic above is of a linkage that I made some years ago using chebby parts.
The stock ford units also lenetrates the firewall just like the regular linkage does. Im thinkging that the position of your engine is a contributing factor.

It's not my set-up.

I only typed the cable part numbers, what they fit and the sources that have them.
