my 79 has exremely easy steering to the point that its not comfortable at all i checked the tie rods and steering gear no leaks not worn bad at any point i replaced the steering stabillizer and it is still very easy you can turn the wheel with your pinky finger with ease there is no play int the steering gear and no loose parts i can find in the front end that i can even get to wiggle any ideas?
That's called "they don't make 'em like they used to". My 69 Cadi was the same way... it tipped the scales at 6700lbs.+ and I could drive/steer with my pinky hooked under the bottom of the wheel with my arm in my lap! That is just something most folks these days aren't accustomed to because new vehicles are a pain to steer (literally in many cases). Rack and pinion is harder to operate by nature of its application. Front wheel drive SUCKS! Torque steer just aggravates me. You fight the wheel all the time because the thing WANTS to straighten out because of the physics of the setup.
In short, get used to it because that's how well its supposed to work. You need to learn to trust in the steering and trust that if something is wrong or you hit a pothole, you WILL still feel it and you WILL be able to tell when and if something is amiss. But until then, accept that your truck is just that comfortable to drive. If you doubt what I am saying... find the worst road you can and go for a drive down it... you will still get the "feel" and feedback through the wheel that you need to make adjustments and good steering decisions in spite of the ease with which the truck maneuvers.
I may get arguments on this one but it will most likely come from folks who, like yourself, have never experienced how easy a vehicle CAN (and should in my opinion) be to operate.
I agree with you greystreak! Even with the big ole 6.9 sitting in mine it steers as sweet as can be. Get in my girls ugly aztek and it feels like it pulls the wheel in my hand all the time. We live in Kentucky so the roads are never straight lol. I grew up with rear wheel drive and have never learned to like or even want to drive a front wheel peel.
