My son's Van (97 E-150 4.6 W/ E4OD trans) is inop due to a accident. Can we tow it 400 mi with the transmission in N?
It might be old school but I remember some automatics that can't be towed because of poor oil circulation without the engine running. Can I tow it or must I remove the drivshaft?
Thanks
If it's a 4.6L it has a 4R70W transmission. The E4OD was never mated to the 4.6L.
In either case you must remove the driveshaft. There is ZERO oil circulation with the engine off. It will destroy the trans long before you're home with the driveshaft in place.
Thanks for the info. The Van is broke down 10 hrs away and I just took a stab at the transmission. But your answer sounds correct. I only asked because the tow truck driver told my son that it could be towed with the rear wheels on the ground. Hopefully they didn't go very far.
