I have rebuilt e4od tranny with all heavy duty parts and oversized tranny cooler, but it still does not shift that great (ie torque converter slips and does not stay locked up). Can I just buy an updated controller to fix this problem. If so where can I find one and how much.
It could be a valve issue. Did your rebuilder go through all of the valves in the pump and valve body?
I fought valve problems in mine on and off for months before just replacing the valve body with a reconditioned one.
If its a hydraulic problem, then a controller will not affect it. Are the symptoms affected by temperature? (does it clear up or get worse as it warms up?).
No the problem does not change its the same all the time. Don't know exactly what was went through. I just have the receipts since I bought the truck used. I was just thinking it might be a controller problem sine the early E4od controllers had lock-up and shift problems because that does seem to be what is happening.
Check u throttle posistion sensor. Make sure the voltage is right on the side of the IP. Alittle bit of voltage difference may make the computer think the throttle is somewhere where the torque convertor isnt fully locked up when it should be.
just so youll know the early E40D processors did not have lock up and or shift problems
that is just some bovine scatlogy spread by those that couldnt diagnose the real issue

Never heard that before. My understanding is that all the lockup and shift functions are either on or off with line pressure and shift timing being the only dynamic variable controlled by computer. Shift firmness is still mostly from the transmission internals.
I certainly can't see how a computer glitch could cause these particular symptoms but I have heard of some cases of guys replacing computers and fixing problems. Only 2 cases so far, and I wasn't there.
