Injection pump installation/priming

I have installed a rebuilt stanadyne injection pump. I have
the lines to the injectors loosened up, some
just sitting on top of the injector and have cranked and
cranked. I opened up the input line at the pump and have
plenty of fuel coming out there. I opened the return line
on top of the pump and some fuel, not like at input,
comes out there. Is there anything else I need to do to
speed up the flow. I recharged my batteries and am ready
to get at it again tomorrow.

It just takes forever because you didn't prefill your injector pump with diesel or ATF also be sure you don't let your starter get too hot. An alternative is to pull it around with another truck.

It really should not take that long. Verify that you FSS is working and hooked up properly or you will crank until the starter melts into a puddle without it starting.

I just did mine on Friday and it only took about 4 cycles of cranking and letting it cool.

Make sure you have power to the fuel shut off solenoid when the key is on.
And then with the key on, pull the wire off the fuel shut off solenoid and touch it to the connector while listening closely.

You should be able to hear the solenoid clicking as you add and remove the power to the terminal.

some of the IP,s trap air in them and cannot purge it normally
i have experienced it several times over the years
take the fuel return line off at the top of the IP and crank it over till there is solid fuel coming from it
then reconnect the line and crank again till fuel is present at the injector lines

Plug in and unplug the FSS a couple times you should hear a click...... I would connect all the lines and crank it over with only 1 or 2 loose. Crank starter for 20 seconds max with a 3 minute cool down between attempts. after the first hint of firing torque all injection nuts 20 ftlbs max. Having all the injector nuts open can allow air back into the system and drainoff.

I will un pluging and touching the plug to the FSS terminal. Dave Spronaugle told me how to do
this, but my memory isn't too good. Thats no excuse though, he resent the picture with that on
the bottom of it. I will try that and if I hear the clicking, I will loosen a couple of the injector caps
and crank over some more. Thanks.

I do have 12 volts at the FSS plug and it does click. I have tightened down all of the injector caps
but two and it will sit like that till tomorrow afternoon sometime I guess. It's rained off and on
most of the day and is raining now and this is a shade tree job. I will get back on after I've
had time to work with it some more and let you know what's happening.
