Question Where to get codes pulled

I called advanced auto and they said that they cant get the codes out. It's a 93 XLT BRONCO 351 auto. The engine light has been on for some time now. Now it is sucking down gas like crazy. This is our only vehicle so i got to keep it running. I still got to do the rear main (fun fun) and find out why it is missing. Replaced the plugs and wires and it starts to miss WTF. I tthink that the O2 sensor is bad as well as the 1st cat might be bad. i want to cut it out of there and dual it out to super 44's. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Shane & Nikki

You can pull the codes yourself with no tools. Find the EEC test harness on the drives side inner fender and put a jumper between the STI and Sig-Rtn pins. Turn the key to run and the codes will flash on the check engine light. Have a pen and paper handy to copy them down, you can turn the key off and start over as many times as it takes to get the codes down. See the link for more info...

Its a bit of pain, but dooable. AutoZone had OBD-1 code readers that they can use for you last time I checked.

The "readers" for EEC-IV aren't that expensive anymore. I think my brother bought one not long ago for about $20.

The way the CEL flashes out the codes makes it pretty easy to read. It begins by flashing 2, 3 or 4 times depending upon how many cylinders you have (one flash for each pair of cylinders). After that, its just a matter of watching as the codes are flashed out. You will most likely get three-digit codes seeing as you have a 93. Each digit of each code will flash out followed by a short pause and each code will be separated by a longer pause. The ENTIRE code string will then flash out a SECOND TIME.

By way of example, Code 213 indicates a bad SPOUT circuit. It would flash out **,*,***
Code 332 indicating insufficient EGR flow would flash out ***,***,**

It takes a bit more attention than simply reading a number from a digital scanner but its less expensive and still gets the job done.

I have to be careful here... NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT! The one I have in my tool box is an Innova 3145 I got it from Kragen, does the job. Works on 81 - 95 ODB I. I think at the time it was around $40.00

+1 - loved mine, got it via amazon.com for about that same price

It makes tracking down problems a lot easier than the paperclip method: push button to run KOEO, wait for codes, diddle with stuff, repeat.

I have seen the readers at WalMart too. They are very basic, as all they do is jumper the connection and count the blinking light for you. - I think they are a good investment. Should be less than $40 as others have indicated. They come with a booklet which will give you the error code meaning. I have one for my Bronco.
