I have a 2004 Explorer 4x4 V-6 and every now and then when backing up with the wheels turned, I can hear and feel a "pop". I know its not normal and was wondering if this was the limited slip, or if they even came with limited slip. I had a shop in town change the rear end oil and I specifically asked if it needed any additive for the differential and they said it did not have limited slip, but every time one of the rear tires starts to spin, I can feel what I think is the clutches engaging. Thanks
my 2002 EXP is automatic 4 x 4. There is a computer that monitors each wheel and compares the speed. If one starts to slip, it puts more power to the others. Seems to work real good in the snow or when climbing a dirt hill. When we first got it, i did something and thought i had a BIG problem... Pulled off the side of road, cranked wheels real hard, then stomped on the throttle to do a quick U turn--- 4 tires turning 4 different speeds-- not good-- sounded like "clutchs locking up" as you said. Computer is thinking your stuck. See if thats whan you got. Been 4 years now. No problems, but i can make it do that on dry pavement in a quick U turn from a stop.
If your explorer has the tow package (2 inch receiver) then you have 3.73 gears with a limited slip. If you have the smaller receiver, you have 3.55 gears and no limited slip. Sounds to me like you need some friction modifier in your rear diff.
Look at the label on the drivers side door and if the axle code starts with a letter then its a limited slip. I think this is right, anyway you should be able to do a search and find out. I have a 2005 Sporttrac and my code is D2, 4.10 gears limited slip.
