Hey guys, I am buying a motor, tranny and transfer case out of a 1996 f250 just for a backup for mine. Its a 351 with an E4OD and the only reason I am buying it is because it only has 100,000 miles(mine has 200,000) and I am getting it for $300 for everything. I am going to be putting it in my garage and letting it sit. I guess I am just wondering if this is wise and how do I go about storing it? What do I need to do to them to let them sit? Thanks for the help, Mike
For long term storage pop the valve covers off and losen all rockers that are compressing springs. Then squirt some oil into each cylinder and replace the plugs, fill the crankcase with fresh oil and pull a plastic bag over the engine to keep dust and debris out. Store the motor in the upright postion on a cart so it's easy to move it around.
Don't forget to leave a note to yourself about everything you did to it.
A friend found a beutiful mitsubishi 2.0 DOHC engine and auto trans, he stored it for a few months till he had the money to modify his car to auto (it was a 5 spd). He wanted to replace the timing belt tensioner before storing it, but could not find one right away, so he just p15ut the cover back on and wrapped it up. When he finnaly got around to replacing his old 300,000 mi leaky engine, he forgot about the tensioner. poor thing didn't stand a chance
How do I squirt oil down the cylinders? What do I use to do that and how much? How should I store the tranny? Do you guys think that this is a wise thing to do? Thanks for your help.
How do I squirt oil down the cylinders?
What do I use to do that and how much?
A tablespoon or two will do it, just remove the plugs and squirt it in the hole. I have an oil pump can for this but a small syringe or squeeze bottle will do too.

You will likely have to drain it because fluid will leak out otherwise. Then just cover and store.

The 5.0 that's currently in my truck and running great was stored in my garage for 10 years like this.
If possible I would suggest running some fuel stabilizer through it. Old gas tends to turn to varnish & gum things up quickly. Don't know if the other truck is running or not. Doesn't need to be driven, just run for a little while to go through the entire system ( injectors, etc. ). Work on lawn mowers on the side & see this A LOT. Park it for the winter, won't start in the spring. Drop the carb. bowl & nasty yellow thick smelly stuff comes out. Clean the carb. up & fires right up.
