E4OD dumping fluid when hot, Used search function already
1991 351/E4Od. was driving for about 40 minutes at 60-65 MPH. Wife asked if it was my truck that was smoking, I pulled over and sure enough it was. The plastic plug on the bellhousing was gushing trans fluid. I added a few quarts to bring it back up after letting it cool down for awhile. I had to drive the truck home so I drove for 10 minutes or so and then pulled over and checked the fluid. I put in 6 quarts and one can of stop leak by the time I got home. Im assuming it dumps the fluid when it gets to a certain pressure or temperature. After adding fluid and letting it cool off its fine until its hot again.
By the time I got home it dumped most of the fluid again, I had my father drive me to the store, I put in another can of stop leak and filled the fluid back up, Im letting it sit for now. I'm thinking it can only be the front seal? Would the front seal leak only when hot?
I'm going to have to see if it leaks just driving locally to the store and stuff, if it does not Im going to have to drive it until I am able to get it fixed, out other car just broke a timing belt yesterday. I can't believe I have two major problems in two days on BOTH of our vehicles.
You may want to read my thread "E4OD up in smoke". I had the same problem Saturday. My truck is 50 miles away at my uncle's, so I haven't been able to look at it. I hope to go get it tomorrow.
Have you tried to drive it or gotten a diagnosis since?
Been driving it to work daily but that is only 2 or 3 miles away, no additional fluid loss yet. Im going to change the fluid and filter this weekend and drive it a little further and see what happens.
Have a look at the cooling fan. It could be worn out.
This will cause fluid to be puked out as it overheats.
Another option is an external transmission cooler.
