Chris has pictures.
The are located inside the mixing chamber on the end of the fuel pickup/gauge sender assembly, inside the fuel tank.
The fuel tank mods that we speak about is eliminating that part, putting a piece of straight pipe on it and then mounting an external spin on filter between the tank and the inlet of the fuel pump.
Doing that makes it easy to change the filter if you get a bad batch.
Simply spin on a new filter.
.
Mine's a "little" different.
I put my fuel pump in the tank. Some of you might because it doesn't have a pre-filter, but it's a pretty rugged design and it just chews up whatever comes through the pump and it is caught by the main filter inside the filter housing up front on the engine.

Sorry, been sleeping on the job I guess.

Yes the screens are inside the fuel tank. Drop the tank and remove the fuel pick up assembly

See the white plastic tube? That's the mixing chamber and there are 2 screens inside there.

Here's what they're supposed to look like

Here's what yours probably looks like

Doing the in-tank mods eliminates this problem from occurring. Dan's method solves this issue also, just in a different manner.

Maybe, Chris. My concern would be that if the fuel was dirty enough to plug the pickup screens, then the injectors would've been getting nasty fuel with a dirty filter and a misssing O-ring. But definitely rule out the other (easier, less expensive) stuff first! I'd make sure there are no related codes, verify fuel pressure, and narrow down from there. Could be pickup screens or tired fuel pump too.

I forgot about the missing o-ring, but the injector holes are pretty small. I would think you'd end up with a plugged injector that did not work at all if you had too much dirt getting through. And that would have been noticeable even at idle, not just passing speed.

Welcome to FTE. No Ford will not sell you the screens. They will sell you an entire pick up assembly for $$$, but you don't need that. You could drop the tank and clean the screens yourself, but if you get a bad batch of fuel, you'll have to drop the tank again. What most of us do instead, is remove those screens and place some type of screen or filter outside the tank before the fuel pump so if there's an issue, we don't have to drop the tank. We also like to address the little issue of still being able to pump 4 or 5 gallons into the tank after the pump clicks off the first time.

We call these the in tank mods. You can do them yourself for not much money, or you can go all out and buy some really nice kits that cost a little bit. Here's instructions on the in tank mods. Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

Another place to look for a fuel restriction caused by gunk is the "check valves". They're little flow restrictors which may now be doing too good a job.

Right where the fuel enters the head's fuel gallery.

I would hope the filter would catch the debris before it got that far. Debris large enough to restrict the check valve would likely mean smaller debris had made it past the valve and I'm guessing would have taken out a few injectors by now with our dead headed fuel system.

You are likely completely correct.

But it's a thought, and worth investigating if all else is normal.

Well......after crawling under it to see what I'm in for with dropping the tank I found the whole under carriage soaked with oil! Coming from the back of the motor, couldn't tell where it was exactly...HPOP or rear main. Was a gallon low on oil too! It's at the ld now so I will find out soon.
