I just got my truck back and a mechanic put a new relay and push button for my Glow plugs. I did this a long time ago but he redid it for some reason. Is this right? Shouldnt there be a ground wire?
edit: its an '83 F250 6.9
Correct! It grounds where they are threaded in. if you want your wait to start light to light while you push the button then hook it to that terminal otherwise just leave it empty. otherwise looks good.
If there was a glow plug relay installed there, there should be a ground on the small terminal where you have the question mark ground label.
But unless I am mistaken I see a small I by that terminal.
If I am correct then there will also be a small S by the other small terminal you have labeled dash button, which I think I also see.
That would indicate someone has installed a starter relay instead of a glow plug relay.
They look almost identical, but the internal electrical connections are different.
On the glow plug relay, both of the small terminals are connected to the relay trigger coil, so it must have a ground on one, power on the other small terminal to activate the relay.
Starter relays ground through the mounting bracket, so it will work with one wire on the S terminal that is supplying power from the dash push button.
The wait to start light is connected to the glow plug terminal (two orange wires) by a small AWG black wire with I think a blue stripe.
Ya, how can you see those letters? haha. Well, it is sending around 12v to each glow plug when I hit the button on the dash. How can I tell if its a starter relay and not a glowplug relay?
Look by the two little terminals and see if there are little letters by them. If so what are they.
Well, the truck is in the shop right now gettin a new oil pan gasket installed. When I get it back this afternoon Ill check it. Im sure It'll have a part number on it as well, Ill google it.
It doesn't matter if it is a starter solenoid or not it just changes that terminal. Are you having problems? If it is working and you are getting proper voltage to the glow plugs I wouldn't mess with it.
OOOOOHHHHHH! gotcha. Thanks for clearin' that up for me. Ill leave her as she lies. haha. All of the glowplugs were burnt out when I got the truck back, i was just making sure it wasnt the 'new wiring'/relay'. When I push the button all plugs are getting between 11-12v, so it sounds like it was a combination between being his fault and Autolite. Thanks for the help
PS: like the new avatar? haha
Some one who didn't know or understand could have easily held the button too long. a matter of seconds makes the difference. Also I don't know if the guy has kids or not but they love to push buttons if you know what I mean.
Man I hope they get the site fixed soon.
I have replied to this post five times, and my post is still not here.
The children pushing buttons and switches is one of the big reasons I recommend using a switched power supply for the power to the manual glow plug switch.
No power to the switch unless the key is turned on can save you from burnt up glow plugs or a dead battery.
Yes it adds a step, turning the key on, before you push the button, but that is all.
