I just fixed my problem with shifter not going into park and being loose as well as pointer not lining up.
Somewhere in this forum I found a reference to two bolts being loose on the shifter mechanism just above the steering column. I got under there and sure enough mine were loose. used a T-30 torx bit and ran them in several turns until tight.
I couldn't get a picture but look for a 1/4" black cable coming up from near the gas pedal over to the emergency brake side. it connects to a metal plate . this is where the mechanism pivots to operate the shifter. Look around here to see the two fasteners.
Thanks to whoever found this to be one of the causes.
That was the problem with my expedition also! It was loose and would roll when in park. I'm glad I looked here before I brought it somewhere, probably would have took advantage of it! Thanks for steering me in the right direction guys!!
I know this is an old thread, but this is what brought me to this site. Thanks!
Great, useful thread and the link with the images was spot-on
It took longer to remove the kick panel from our 1998 Lincoln Navigator than it did to tighten the two, T30 bolts which now instead of a "sloppy shifter", it now click, click, clicks, like when she was brand new.
We are original owners of this SUV, so we know and remember what she sounded like when new. Thanks again!
