7.3 Idi into turbo?

If I found a older F250 with the 7.3 idi engine could I convert it to a turbo for better power and mpg?

Thanks Doug

dougbrown,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Yes, the NA 7.3 is a fine engine to install a turbo on.

Yup A turbo will help both MPG and power. ATS, banks and hypermax all make turbo kits for these engines. I have the factory installed turbo off the early 94 7.3 IDI on the 6.9 i installed in my truck and it runs great and get good fule milage, well considering what it is.

i have a question on that... so the other day i got in to an argument with this very very "smart" person that thinks they know every thing about every thing and just to get my facts strait the 7.3l idi came with a turbo before they changed to the power strock and the 7.3l pistons will not shatter if you turbo it right?

You can turbo a 6.9 or a 7.3 and the pistons will not shatter. You just have to make sure you get the right turbo, and proper guages, (pyrometer and boost guage) and make sure you have it set up right, it will run fine and make easy power. The turbo only provides the oxygen the engines are starving for.

well this is kind of an intresting folow up to my other posts but i was wondering it is worth turboing my 7.3L idi with around 250000 miles on it or just make a ram air system for it

i found a turbo for an ok price with every thing but the exhaust down pipe

in a heartbeat.

If the motor ever gives out you can probly sell the turbo for the same price your paying for it, and a ram air intake can be made up for next to nothing.

I took stock 6.9 pistons, milled 40 thousandths off the top of the pistons and am running over 20 pounds of boost on my engine.
That is twice what a stock turbo system will put out and twice what the stock head bolts can stand.

No shattered pistons in over 100,000 miles.
But I do usually keep my gross weight under 22,000 pounds or so.

I put that weight in there because I live in the mountains of WV, so you know I do run the crap out of the engine at that weight pulling the mountains.

and the people i talk to on this end are in that line of thinking too

i mean you rebuild an old air cooled after 35000 miles

50K on a rebuild and it is about broken in to where you can really start running it hard.
