Driving a 2000 f550 service truck for contract welding and HD mechanical work. 2002 7.3 diesel for power. New to the forum but read all the hpop posts on this forum. I gather that most of the fittings and plugs on a hpop are considered non servicable but you can still find replacement orings. My hpop has just developed an oil leak from the cover at the back of the pump. I'm refering to the one secured by a snap ring. I have a new pump sitting on my desk but I don't want to replace my old one if there is a reasonable work around to my problem. Any help would be really appreciated. Tom
Chris
Thanks for your reply.
The leak is about a quart or so every 100 miles or so. But it's messy. On the job I may have to have the engine running to run the air compressor of the crane or something and there's a puddle of black oil there when I leave. Not a good thing for a man in my business to leave behind.
The link you left for me was exactly what I'm looking for. I was told by the man who sold me the replacement part that it was a very unusual leak and that he could offer me no solution except a replacement pump. He's a good guy though because he told that to me in just such a way that I had a good idea that there was an alternate solution out there. He just couldn't tell me straight out.
I see by the picture in the link that this is an axial piston pump so I expect there'll quite a bit of spring pressure behind that plate. Ever popped one off?
Thanks for your help.
Tom
I've never had one off, but from the few that I've read about here, no one has mentioned spring pressure being something that caused a problem for your run of the mill shade tree.
Make VERY sure that your leak is on the back plate. THIS IS A RARE, VERY RARE spot for the HPOP to leak. Many have found oil on the back side of the pump only to find that it was a slow seep from one of the discharge hoses or the small plug on the back of the HPOP that causes the oil to settle on the lip of the HPOP rear plate lip.
Excellent point Bob. I should have mentioned that myself.
Tom, to give you an idea of the kind of folks you're dealing with, guzzle92 who just told you to make sure you had the right part, is the same guy you just placed that order with in the link I provided.
It's probably an o-ring leak, but he's right. It's best to make sure you order the right one.
Well thanks to both of you.
I'm sure going to make sure I have it right though. I can see the possibility that I may have made a mistake, all right.
Tom
PS. Just ordered all orings possible. Bases covered. Thanks for the tips.
Well I guess you're right and my face is a little red. After a closer look at the rear of my hpop I can see the leak comes from the smaller plug that is higher and to the left. The oil from this leak makes it's way into the snap ring groove and that's why the leak appeared to be coming from the plate behind the snap ring. Glad I ordered all the orings and not just that one. Thanks again for the pointer. Tom
Dont know that this will make you feel any better, but I once had thought I had a leak there as well, and although this group was supportive, they kept telling me to recheck as well.
Guys
I just wanted to bump this up 'cause i have a question or two. I completed the repair or my hpop yesterday and so far so good, but.... form what I read before hand was that I needed to remove the pump before attempting to change the seal on the rear plug 'cause there's a check ball behind the plug that'll become dislodged or lost if you don't have the pump in an upright position. So I went to work and pulled the pump and put in the vice. To start with, the plug was loose, which explains why the oring went. And yes, the threads on the plug and pump body were perfectly fine. The plug almost came out by finger and there was no check ball in there at all, just a gallery with nothing in it. I coulda just removed the plug, replaced the oring and put the plug back in there without all the work of removing the pump. Go figure...
The plug that has to have the pump removed is the plug on the bottom of the HPOP, not the rear. The plug on the rear can be repaired while still on the truck.
So what was behind the plate? Anything that falls out? I have a little oil there after completely cleaning mine when the "non-serviceable" plug blew its O-ring.
