Post 81 ford bronco, need help

i had to change my carburetor 2bbl intake on my ford 302 bronco.i went to pull the distirbutor and forgot to mark where the rotor button was pointing when i pull it out.i was look my harmonic balancer and was wondering if the line that is marked across the balancer, is the marking for top dead center. if it is, does the rotor button need to be pointing at one cylinder it self or does it need to be pointing at the terminal on the distributor cap that is marked number one cylinder

Rotate the engine with the spark plugs out, when you feel compression in the number one cylinder, rotate the engine to Top Dead Center, that's where the harmonic balancer is marked zero, then locate the distributor to point to cylinder number one. That should get you close enough to time in the regular way.

That's how I do it too, however, when ever I mention it, people ask me how I know if it's up on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke. I guess I've just always been lucky.
