If I pull the valve covers...???

Can ya'll help me with a list of to do's?

I have heard of re-torquing some of the bolts... which ones and to what ft/lbs?

Also read about the UVCH and some zip ties or something???

Any special sockets needed? hex bit / torx bit?? swivels???

What about reinstalling the valve covers? do you need any sealant or gasket?

Thanks.

Valve Covers

Here is a link to what I did a few months ago while under the valve covers. Started out with new glow plugs, but did the retourqe of rocker arms and injectors while there as well. The valve cover gasket is reusable, no sealants needed. I would make sure to get the ford shims, or grind to quarters down for the UVCH connection.

Yep -- those are the numbers I used. Pay attention to the "inch-lbs." vs. "foot-lbs"...

I'm due to pull my covers again to re-torque my injectors. Not looking forward to it. The bolt on the passenger side right by the AC evaporator box gave me major fits.

The truck is about to turn over to 200,000 miles....

So, I'm thinking these items have never been addressed and the truck is basically stock...

I dont know what to compare it to so far as the sound of the engine. ie: comparing it to the sound of when it was new compared to now.

I do notice that when I use the diesel kleen the motor quiets down a good bit and seems to run a little "hushy".

So far I have the following to do's:

1 UVCH harness
2 Check for rubbing wires
3 Re torque the Rocker Arm bolts
4 Re torque the glow plugs
5 Re torque the Injector hold down bolts

Looking at doing this soon also. 200,000 miles on your truck, glow plug replace may be better??? Have you ohmed them out?

Swivels and a couple of different length extensions is all you'll need. Remember to pay attention to the nut holding the dipstick tube in place. If that flange starts to spin, stop and find some vice grips to hold the flange so you don't wrap the dipstick tube around your socket.

Rocker arm bolts circled in Red, Lower injector hold down bolt circled in blue

If you decide on the DIY shim, grind the quarter down to the top of Washington's head.

Then just slide it in place. It's a tight fit, but it will slide down inside the tab.

naa that was easy.
I used a 1/4 drive ratchet and went at it from the wheel well and it was fine. Then use some extentions to get at the one up top in the back as well. I did the 50cent fix in about 45 min tops. Even afte I cleaned the valve covers of grease before I started the project.

It wasn't access to it that was the problem -- the threads seemed to be a bit buggered up, so it's very tough to get the dang thing started. Of course, its the hardest one to get to...

It holds up the barbs on the clip to keep them from dropping down and allowing the plug to release. Look closely at the 3rd picture.

UVCH- under valve cover harness. it is the connector that connects the outside wiring to the under the valve cover wiring that goes to the glow plugs and
The quarter heeps those two connectors from getting unplugged a fiarly common probles with our 7.3's. As roland said "It holds up the barbs on the clip to keep them from dropping down and allowing the plug to release. Look closely at the 3rd picture.

I think Costa got cut off so I'll finish. It's the connector for the wiring that goes to the glow plugs and injectors. If that little plug comes loose, then one or more of your injectors stop working.

The quarter just happens to be the right thickness and width to act as a shim to keep the connector from coming apart.
