A friend of mine just bought an 83 Mercury Grand Marquis, with the 302 in it. It ran fine for a day, but when we were in it the other day, it died, and we could not get it started again. Whenever we try to start it, I can hear that the starter is not cranking. It's seems to just grind. We have tried jumping it with my Jeep, and a few other things, but no avail yet. We had to leave it in a parking lot, and towing is not yet an option.
I know it's not a Ford truck, but I figure the engines are similar at least?
Could just be a bad starter or bendix.. or teeth stripped off the flywheel (or flexplate if you prefer). Since he's only had it for one day, it's hard to know if it was acting up before or not. Depends on the sound of the grind. Depends on why it died, too. If the engine is seized...
Just a lot of options... it's hard to 'see' and 'hear' with words.
I had this problem with my 1987 ford 351w. I first replaced the starter i cranked it up it ran fine. Killed it wint to start it back up was grinding. Looked at the flywheel it had a bad spot so i pulled the tranny in put a new one in while i had it out put new front seal in torque converter. Didint have to i just did it while i had it out. after puting it back in starts perfect i hope its just the starter for you. You dont have to buy a new starter you can just put a new bendix in it. I just wanted a heavy duty starter.
