High RPM's at cold start

Lately when I start my truck in the morning or after it has set for a period of time, it will rev to what I would say about 2000 rpm (I don't have a tach) for about 5 seconds then back down to high idle until it is warmed up. Is this normal, or is there something I should investigate? The truck is a 2003 with the 4.2L V6.

My 5.4 idles around 1100 when cold, then around 600 when started just after being shut off. Anywhere from 5-10 minutes that is... It runs smooth but it does act different when hot/cold.

Sounds normal to me on cold starts mine goes to about 1500 for a few seconds then down to a 1000 then after about 1 minute 600 or so.

Completely normal. It does this to do a fast warm up of all the sensors and whatnot so they report properly, the computer actually ignores most of the sensors on startup for up to 10 seconds I think, as they are not reporting properly because of the temperature. Nothing to worry about.
