My truck is lifted and has 35" tires on it now and i went to change the brake pads the other day and realized the rotors were pretty much toast too. Its around $300 for some upgraded rotors and another 100 for upgraded pads (EBC brand). Can I get away with using some stock replacement rotors? Should I upgrade to the better brake pads? I wouldnt think I would absolutely need better rotors since my tires arent too much bigger than stock. And how hard is it to do a brake job (rotors and pads)? I thought I knew how to change the pads but when I went to do it the other day it wasnt like what I remember from my other truck (94 f250 gasser). Is swapping rotors a big job? Thinking about just taking it to a local shop, but money is an issue. I dont want to spend more money than I have to on the truck, but with the crappiest insurance available I need to be able to stop pretty good.
my brake components are from advance autoparts, cheapy parts. i ran 35's for a long time and now run 36's. i tow alot and dont have any problems. i did swap to rear disc brakes last winter and that was a HUGE improvement in the truck.
the rotors on teh front are not hard to do, you need a special hub nut tool but every parts store should have it, the rest is just basic hand tools, sockets and hammers and such. you do have to punch the wheels studs out and beat them back in. and air hammer makes it gravy but it can be done with a hammer and longer punch
Alright thats good to know. A couple weeks ago I started gettin noise that sounds like I have super swampers up front. I have Mickey Thompson MTZ's which were impressively quiet and now all of a sudden its alot louder. My friends who barely ride in it noticed without me saying anything to him. After rotating tires it made no difference. And since I might have the front end "apart" puttin on new rotors is there anything I should look for that might cause this like a wheel bearing or something?
look for scoring on the bearing races and roughness on the bearings themselves. it will be pretty obvious, they are tapered roller bearings. if you suspect a problem just get new bearings and races, they are fairly cheap. the races drive out with a punch can be a pain to knock the new ones in without a race driver. harbor freight sells a race driver kit for 15-20 bucks that works well

biostroke here is a write up i did a while back to walk you thru doing your brakes. The only thing is it is for a 2wd. The little bit of a difference with the hub you may encounter I'm sure some one on here can help you with. Check out this and let me know if it helps. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ml#post4635100
