i have actually had the opposite experience than the op. i have never had an negative comment about my truck. but i have had people come up to me and tell me how much they like the 7.3's and that they wish they would come back out with the 7.3 in the new fords. iv also had people come up to me and ask me how much i would want for my truck. as well as several people giving me complements on my truck.
my truck is not a cream puff, its in nice condition probably above average for the year and millage but it has its fair share of nicks and small scrapes and some dings and the front bumper is tweaked slightly so its not like im driving around a showroom condition truck eather. i have really had nothing but complements from people on my truck.
I usually get comments and people walking across parking lots to talk to me about my truck, one guy wanted me to trade for his late 99 right there. Obviously, I declined.
There is only one guy that gives me crap and that's '260karl' he drives a 99 V10, 02? V8, and his pride, 04 V10 F250 FX4.
Does anybody ever catch any flak for driving in OBS pickup? I constantly hear remarks about how old my Stroker is and how I should man up and get a new pickup.
Almost everyone I know drives brand new chevy half-ton and think they are the cream of the crop.
I have had a few friends give me a hard time about it.
I ask what they drive "a new chevy 1/2 ton?...o rly?...sorry about your *cough cough* manhood" and then they usually leave me alone lol
We travel all over the US and Canada, haven't had the nerve to try Mexico yet, my wife anyway. When I go into a camp site, you have brand new pickups and beautiful diesel pushers. Its the rich sticking their noses up at me with my OBS. If I get a chance to talk to any of them I just tell them I have no payments, no rust and lots of power. I also tell them that I could pull two of my 5th wheels (12k empty, I pulled a 24K 42' enclosed car hauler). I just love it the next day I go by them on a mountain grade blowing smoke in their faces!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't mind getting new interior though.
Once you get to those campsites, you unhook and have a real vehicle to drive around. My in-laws are avid campers. To each their own I guess. They have a roadtek 190, about the size of a 15 passenger van, and they tow a very little car. Don't know what it is, but it would almost fit inthe back of my pickup. They are cheap with their traveling. He makes fun of the couples in their diesel pushers, having to be selective on their campsites for not fitting, slow on the hills, and lots of fuel to move them. He also makes fun of the guys with the 5th wheels, having such a huge camper and needing a big truck to pull them. I tell him it's all in what you want, besides, the guys with the pickup trucks only have one vehicle to maintain, not 2. And they never have to borrow a pickup when they need one. Shuts him up pretty quick!
CampSpringsJohn, I know what your saying about these guys using a big rig to pull their 5th wheel. The part where you said 'needing a big truck to pull them' is all in their heads. I think that's what you meant because my 5th wheel isn't the biggest but its 34' long with three slides and weights 12K empty. I also travel with a full tank of water (750lbs) plus a lot of other stuff so I'm pretty sure I'm at 15k or more. I put bigger axles on and 14 ply tires to handle it. OK, my point is that you Don't need a semi to pull a 5th wheel!! Its all their heads that they need it. Maybe, just maybe, it would be safer and have better braking power but that's about it.
Ugh, I guess I forgot about the whole camping while driving across the country experience. Definitely got some stares down the nose. Hard to if it was the 12 y.o. truck or the 15 y.o. trailer, both, or what. We did pass a lot of them on the road the next morning though :P
Whatever. I'm guessing they don't get in their rigs and think "wow I just love this truck".
Oldbird, to my father-in-law, an F350 crew cab is a huge truck. I work on semi's and dump trucks, and have a 97 Super Duty for a work truck. I agree with everything you said.
Triskadek, 'stares down the nose', that's an excellent way of putting it.
CampSpringsJohn, Oh, I thought you were talking about a semi pulling a 5th wheel camper, that's overkill. When I moved up from my smaller 5th wheel to my bigger one I thought I would have to get a F350 dually. Someone told me about Firestone airbags, I put them on and they are fantastic! I could probably use a dually in some of these side winds though but all in all I do real good. I didn't want to get another OBS and start modding all over again too. lol
