Lately my ignition has been giving me some serious trouble. I insert my key and attempt to turn the truck on. The ignition will not move. It wiggles but will not turn. I have to fight it for a while before something gives and allowes me to turn the ignition system. The key comes out with no problem. I can tell by feel that something is not right, but I do not know what.
I would try pulling the ignition lock assembly out and inspecting it for issues. It's pretty simple, there should be a small hole under the column, with the key in the ignition insert a small allen wrench or something similar into that hole and rotate the key if you can until the assembly slides out. You can buy them new or you can pull one from a truck at a salvage yard as long as it has keys. Good luck, hope this helps.
buy a new key cylinder, my 93 has been through 2 of them. eventually the key breaks off when you don't want it too. easy to change, remove your plastic, put key in run , push the little button on the top with a paper clip, pull out cylinder, install new one, put plastic back on, no more problem for another 150,000 miles
have you tried another key? or turning that key over? the keys get worn sometimes. also could be the accuator hung up. that will require the wheel to be pulled.
OKay thanks guys, appreciate it. I'll invesitage the hole and talk to my dad about it. I really don't feel like being stranded at a gas station or store or whatever. I wouldn't mind so much if my truck broke down at the girlfriend's house, lol. But we know how life works, right?
I agree with whats been said. It is most likely the key cylinder, but could be the actuator. If you replace it you may have to have 2 keys though, since the door keys will not work in the ignition anymore.
There is a tab that you depress or push up on with a very small screwdriver or icepick with the key in the run position and it pulls right out.
okay thanks for your reply Ty. I don't know wht an actuator is but I guess I'm soon to find out. hopefully everything will hold out until I can actually get the time to fiddle with it.
thanks everyone, much appreciated.
oh by the way, my left turn signal arrow light went out. the turn signal still works but the light inside the cab went out. just a bulb?
Did you try turning the wheel a little? Some people dont think about doing that. Some cars you need to turn the wheel a little before the key will turn. Just a suggestion before you start ripping stuff apart.
actuator is the rod between the key and the ignition switch. the turn light is a bad bulb. you have to remove the cluster to get at it. best to replace all the bulbs at this time, as they will start to blow out 1 at a time, from now on.

I agree with the bulb statement 100%-it's a pain to keep removing the cluster
