I have a 2000 Ford Ranger with the Mazda M50D-R1 5 Speed. I was changing the pinion seal today, when I noticed that the rubber like foam above the transmission, near the shifter, was soaked in oil. Is it from the Shift Rail Plugs? As you can see, there is no trans fluid near the plugs.
I guess what I'm asking is, is the fluid getting blown up to the foam, or is something around the shift lever leaking? I pulled the cup holder up from inside the cab, and it was just as wet directly around the shifter. Is there a seal there that can be replaced when the shift lever is pulled?
was ther evidence of fluid leaking from the plugs, it doesnt appear to be so. Could be a valve cover leak with it blowing back ontot he firewall and moving back.
As to a seal around the shifter not that I can think of. but also is it wet around where the shifter bolts in? I think they changed the design of the plugs in the mid-late 90's so it really should not be a problem on 2000, but I am not sure. In my 94 they didnt look like the ones you got. Actually I never saw seepage from the rail plugs but then the previous owner had lost all the oil and then used RTV to cover the plugs! We had the trans rebuilt and metal plugs installed after we bought the truck, but again I never saw any oil spots up where yours are.
Does not look like a shift rail plug leak. When mine were leaking the fluid ran down the back side of the transmission. I would look at the boot around the shifter stub. If there is no fluid loss or drips I wouldn't worry about it too much.
