I need the plugs for my 95 f150 4.9 manual M50d. I am having trouble locating rubber ones. I spoke with Jegs and they say Dorman part 326-555-074 works for my application. Theirs are steel.
Will steel work or does anyone know where the rubber ones are available? Thank you. Sandy
If you are set on the rubber ones and can't find them, I just popped my leaking rubber plugs out and siliconed them and pushed them back in. Three years and counting with no leaks.

I had read about that and several have had the same success as you. In the meantime I will see if rubber ones are available. Anyone used the metal ones? I think I will pull mine and check their condition and silicone them If no one knows about the rubber ones or has had success with the metal ones. Thank you. Sandy
The size they gave you is too small. Dorman 555-108 is what I used, with a 5/8" nominal diameter and .22" height. You can buy a box of 10 on Rock Auto for $2.50 plus shipping.
Install them the same as an engine freeze plug. They are a nice tight fit; I believe I drove them in using a 3/8" extension with a light coating of Permatex #2 sealant. I would not reuse the rubber plugs if I was you.

I don't mind reusing them but I would rather have new parts. Here is the info from Dorman on part 555-108.
555-108
Steel Cup Expansion Plug 5/8 In., Height 0.220
Application Summary: Chevrolet Spectrum 1988-85, Geo Spectrum 1989
They are the size you mention but not for my truck which really doesn't mean anything for this parts application for what we are using it for. Is your tranny like mine M50d? Are you sure about the number before I order them if I do? NOT second guessing you, just clarifying. Thanks Sandy

Thanks for the help and thank you for the link. When you did yours was there a gasket for some kind of door thing I read about that you have to remove. I'm not sure it was for our tranny but I think so and they said to replace the gasket.
I installed the replacement metal plugs from Allstate Gear (I think) a couple years ago and still leak-free.
X2 on the comment to put the transmission in neutral. I followed the advice found in several on-line sources to leave it in gear and that gave me issues on re-install. Put it in neutral and it goes back in neutral and all is well.
Question: Supposing you were to have the OEM rubber plugs to install, would you think it could be done from underneath instead of through the floor? This post got me thinking of alternative parts and methods since I need to replace mine as a precaution.
1- I happened upon a well nut that got me pondering them as a replacement, using a washer on the head to make it swell properly. The pictured one is a 3/8 when a 5/8 would be needed.
2- I removed the OEM plugs from a spare top cover and cleaned them up. They are surprisingly great condition so I plan on replacing mine with them. I snapped a pic for reference.
Been busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger so I haven't crawled under my truck to look for myself. Thought I'd get some opinions from you folks.
