This week they are installing a rebuilt 400 in my 78. They are also putting an aftermarket timing chain set that is set to 0 degrees, headers, cam, and an Edelbrock Preformer intake. I'm thinking I should use around a 650 cfm carb. Does anyone have any carb recommendations as far as brand or type? Does anyone think I should be using a smaller or larger carb?
Well, bigger is not always better, specially when it comes to carbs, I have an Edelbrock 600 on my 351M, I don't think I would go any bigger. My 300 inline 6, I had a holley 390 4bbl, I could get 15-16mpg all day long, I went to a Edelbrock 500cfm,,, dropped it down into the 12's and it ran a tad rich.
So long story short, I wouldn't recommend going over 600-650 cfm.
I would do a 625fcm road demon. Thats what I have for my 1985 Mustang GT. I also have a 750cfm speed demon on my 1977 F-150 and I love it. Great carbs thats for sure.
I second the 625 Demon, mine ran great on my 400 and now its on my 351C and still running strong. I have read that a 625 Demon flows like a 650 Holley.
Thanks to everyone for their opinion. I will research the different options. I haven't seen the Demon carbs. Who sells those? Also everyone always talks bad about the 351m and 400 saying they are thirsty and underpowered. I know what they are like stock but will these modifications make a big difference or am I wasting my money?
I run a 600 Holley on my '76 F250 4x4. 390 with an Edelbrock Performer intake, Hooker headers, stock cam and MSD distributor, 6A box and Blaster SS coil. It runs very good.
