I'm replacing manifold gaskets on my 352 engine. I notice that the heat riser was tied off and the spring was missing. Should I replace it with a new one or just leave it alone? It has a replacment two ba Holley carb.

LMC sells a heat riser (repro). My personal experience with one is that it fits...sorta. Now, it may be because my exhaust studs are worn/corroded, but the fit was loose and it would blow out gaskets very quickly. I had sleeves made and it's better. The non-donut gasket is an odd size and aftermarket ones that are "close enough" will blow out. FoMoCo ones can be found via ND's sources or from Green Sales. I have my new replacement wired open in an attempt to keep the gaskets from repeatedly blowing (haven't installed my NOS ones yet). It takes an FE forever to warm up no matter what you do so I don't think they are that important.

The so called "odd" size gasket (C1SZ9450A) was used on every FE engine from 1958 thru 1964 (prior to donuts which were introduced in 1965), and on one side of the heat riser valve 1965/76.
