Brain storming/sleeper project

My wifes ride is an 02 EX( aka, the bus ) that is stock except for the 6637 aswell as a edge evo( dont like but it was at a very good price). I am looking to raise the performance and make it look and sound basically stock. I do want to maintain as good or nearly as good of fuel milage as I can beacuse we do take it on road trips to the beach and veious other highway trips.
I was looking at doing injectors, 3.5 downpipe 4 inch exhaust ( alum or ss ?), and a flip type tuner. I like the sound of the dp 5 or 6 or even the sct. I am going to do gauges as well.
I think a VB would also be a wise investment. SO I guess the short of it is, I am looking to slowly build up the EX to perform great and maintian or increase fuel mileage for as little money as possiable. What combos come to mind and where do I buy them at? Thanks for all opionions. FTE rules!!!!!

P.S. I am not affraid to use already used perforamce parts if the price is right.

I say Riffraff Diesel is a great place to find parts. Definitely the best prices around.

Riffraff Diesel

Pretty much all the parts on my truck came from Riffraff.

Yep, I second what Pete said. 90% of my business has been with Clay. He'll hook you up.

Go 4" turbo back -- no need to keep the crappy 3" down-pipe. Definitely do the trans mods. They are very much worth doing to keep it healthy as long as possible, and it's best to do them before tunes. Injectors will make a HUGE difference. I just put hybrid single-shots in mine about a month ago, and it's unbelievable! I'm running north of 400 rwhp, a *and* getting 22+ mpg on the highway. Definitely a win-win situation.

Oh, and you will need a turbo of some kind as well. At least a van turbo, or maybe a GTP 38r. I'm running a van turbo right now, and it's okay for now. Considering other options, but I'm running fairly large hybrids (235cc with 100%-over nozzles).

Hey Joe, what's the advantage to putting in single shots over the split shots that are the stockers?

They will run off your stock HPOP saving a fair piece of $$$$. Hybrids use even less oil. I'm holding 2800-3000 psi now where I was dropping to 1700-2000 with splits. This is with the stock 17* pump. They also give you better mileage than splits.

Sounds like I need to look into some injectors. Think that may be next summers mod.

The general order of mods is somthing like this.

1.Intake
2. exhaust
3. gauges. (These are important!)
4. Valve body or trans mods.
5. Chip.

That will get you to about 310hp to the wheels. That would be your cheapest option. And Ive gotten 19mpg on the highway with my 80 econ tune from dp tuner.

If you still want to go for more hp after that you will need a bigger turbo, and this is where it starts to get $$$$$$$$$. Turbos and sticks arnt cheap. And since you dont have a forged rod motor, its going to be risky going over 400hp.

The difference between the F5 and the F6 is that with the F6 you can have your tunes emailed to you, so you dont have to wait for a reburn. Seeing your in WV, Id go with the SS exhaust, to prevent the rust from salt on winter roads.

Thanks for the reps everyone. I like the sound of the hybred sticks. Good economy and good power. What kind of tranny mods would be needed to run 350 ish to the wheels? We bought it used and it has 183,XXX on it now. I am gettting ready to flush to tranny and replace the filter soon. What kind of VB do you guys run and how much are they? Thanks for everything.

For me, I would do a BTS valve body, 6.0 tranny cooler, and a precision industries Stallion torque converter. Oh wait, thats what I DID do. I am probably in the 320-330 range, and 9,000 #. till I replace my turbo. This trans probably has about 75k on it so far, runs very well.

Good to hear Joe you did break the 400 HP mark. What did you turn?

Since you're looking for lowest dollar cost, stay away from injectors and turbo. They can/will make a huge improvement, but it comes with a big price tag. Hybrid injectors are around $2500, and they won't don you much good unless you upgrade your turbo, a BB turbo is $1800.

If you do the "basics": intake, 4" exhaust, open intake, gauges and custom chip, you'll be thrilled with improved performance of your X.

I got my hybrids for less than $2300, and I'm running a van turbo (~$900 into it, and stocker sold off to partially finance it). It can be done for less, for sure. non-hybrid Singles are even less $$$ and get you a nice bump in power too (and probably more "compatible" with the van turbo).

Eddie: I haven't dyno'ed yet. I'm going on the math right now. Guys with smaller sticks are at or over 400, so I'm sure I am. One of the other guys running a very similar setup dynoed ~425ish.
