I had this question with a previous post with alot of other questions so it really never got answered. I have a 79 F150 parts truck with the rear end still intact. Will the axle shafts in it change out with the ones in my 73 F100? One of the ones in it is bent(its only bent on the very end, making the wheel wobble slightly).
If it won't would there be anything stoping me from changing out both axle shafts and the third member from the donor? Thanks.
That depends on if the splines match. They came in 28 and 31 spline verisons. You may need to pull it out to know for sure, although I have been told that you can tell by the weight rating on the trucks as the heavier rating had the 31 spline axles.

1973/79 F100's or F150's could have either 28 or 31 splined axleshafts.
The only way to find out which is which without pulling an axle is by the rear axle ID tag code.
But...that ID tag code will not tell you how many splines the axle has...unless you have the parts catalog.
The involved procedure: The tag lists a specific rear axle code, the parts catalog decodes this code, gives the rear axle parts list.
The parts list then lists axleshafts by the ID tag code, but doesn't list the spline count.
After you figure out what the axleshaft part number is, then you have to go to the axleshaft ID section, find the part number...then you will see how many splines it has.
Confusing, ain't it!
If y'all post the ID tag code, it'll take me about 30 seconds to give you the spline count, cuz I did this jazz for 35 years.
btw: Some 1977/79 F100/150's do not have 9" rear ends. Why? Because Ford also installed Dana 44 rear ends in some of these trucks.
Ok NumberDummy, do your magic, lol. The 79 F150 Tag says: WDM-CN 9BC
3-50 9 361A
The 73 F100 Tag says:
WDM-AC 3EC
3.25 9 331A
WDM-CN = Parts list #88 = D8TZ4234D ... Axle Shaft = 31 Splines.
Ford 9" / 3.50-1 / non Limited Slip / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.
9BC = Assembled the 3rd week (C) of February (B), 1979 (9).

WDM-AC = Parts List #91 = D3TZ4234K .. Axle Shaft = 28 Splines.
Ford 9" / 3.25-1 / non Limited Slip / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.
3EC = Assembled the 3rd week (C) of May (E), 1973 (3).
