I'm little. 17. I'm older than my truck though, by 4 years!! (an 89).
But I hate admitting my age because of the automatic stereotyping it gets. I'm not obnoxious and I'm not a moron and I'm not a daddy's little truck driver just because I'm 17. :7
Besides, all the stuff on my truck I put on myself (except for the rebuilt engine / tranny.) How many kids can say that??
Not too many, but I can When I was 16 I bought my own truck (a 82 F-150 4x4 with a 351 Windsor) and yanked the engine/tranny, had them rebuilt, then put them back in. Before that I was working on farm trucks, tractors, pickups, ect.
Your right though, not a lot of young folks can say what you can. Too many out there get a car or truck handed to them, get their mantainance and stuff paid for, ect. It's kinda sickning to see. That's one thing I like about message boards like this one, most folks here are shade tree mechanics and do-it-yourselfers, despite their age.
That ain't no joke. I had a truck handed to me, only to drive to school, and when something broke, dad paid for parts and fixed it becuz it was his. He said he'd never give me a truck and here I am, 21, buying my own becuz my father didn't lie. He didn't buy me a truck. He loaned me his for 2 of the 3 I had it. Usually he fixed stuff hisself and I'd go take a look and then run off the like the typical female, but I dated a mechanic and that changed everything. The only time I got to spend with him was under the hood and I fell in love with it. (working on motors that is...) On that same note, when my daddy's truck broke the last time (timing gear on an |6 300 lost half of it's teeth) I was the one climbing around tearing it apart figuring out what was broke and fixing it. Dad had just had a complete knee replacement and couldn't do it but I'd'a done it anyway to get it done quicker. Surprised my dad and so for that, he said his mechanic shop would have charged him about 500 or more to do all the stuff I did and since he only paid 300 for the truck, he gave it to me then becuz I worked and earned it. Then I wrecked it and he gave me 350 to get it back. (went to the new truck as the difference between the loan and the selling price but ... ) I still know people that can't change a tire... Must be nice to have money.....
Thanx!

Hey this is my first time to even look at this forum. I guess it's too far down on the page I never saw it. We should get it moved up to the top! Anyways, I'm 18 and (to avoid stereotyping as mentioned before) do everything myself except rebuild automatic tranny's. Well, gotta run.
I was handed a car when I turned 17, had some fun times in it but it sucked money out of my pockets like mad. Turned all my assets towards my Fords instead of fixing that heap. I've rebuilt a few engines and a truck, now my dad askes me for advice sometimes. It makes me sick when people say they would love to build their own truck or do an engine swap but "don't know how." Do they think I was born a hot rodder? Hmm...nevermind.
im 21 and i have never hade a car or truck bought for me and the only time i paid for work was when i got into a wreck and had to get some frame work done i just bought me a sweet 76 ford F-150 supercab needs some work last owners didnt take care of her but she is my baby now and im gowing to restore her to her former glory (just need to figure out where to get some body parts at) i have already started on her engine a 351m/400 she has lots of power and runs real good
