460 main brg's

I started to install main bearings in my old 460 engine. The old bearings had a ford part # of C8VE6A338-A-B also top line DAB, second line 1 -74 3E with a large C stamped into outside, and the ford logo at the bottom. There is no marking of any -10 -20 -30 or does it say STD. Am i safe to assume this is a std size no under size? I am not doing a complete rebuild on this old dog just rod and main's and new oil pump. The large C is something i have never seen before, was wondering if any one could explain??? I know, know but money is real tight. THANKS IN ADVANCE OLDMANBERGIE

" Am i safe to assume this is a std size no under size?" I'd say so.

x2 on the micrometer. If the engine is all original and has not been screwed with than you should have std size bearings, but it's hard to tell WTF people will do. I've found std bearings on -10 crank before in a 289, rattled like hell...

"One under" main bearings.

Ford ID number: C8VE-6A338-A = Ford part number: C8SZ-6333-H .. Upper 429/460 Main Bearing ~ Front, Front Intermediate, Rear Intermediate, Rear / Standard BLUE = 001" U/S.

Ford ID number: C8VE-6A338-B = Ford part number: C8SZ-6333-J .. Lower 429/460 Main Bearing ~ Front, Front Intermediate, Rear Intermediate, Rear / Standard BLUE = 001" U/S.

At some point the factory installed standard RED bearings were replaced by these 001" U/S BLUE bearings...

Most likely by a Ford Dealer, or by a Ford Authorized Engine Rebuilder, as this was SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) when engines were rebuilt, and the crankshafts showed no wear.

Ford usually marked bearings that were standard RED or standard BLUE with a splash of indelible ink in the apropos color...that usually did not wear off.

btw: I would not be a bit surprised if the rod bearings are also 001" U/S.

C8SZ-6211-A .. Standard RED Rod Bearing / Marked: C8VE-6211-A

C8SZ-6211-B .. Standard BLUE Rod Bearing / Marked: C8VE-6211-B

Info sources: 1965/72 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog / 1941/71 Ford Master Cross Reference Catalog - Crosses Ford ID numbers over to actual Ford part numbers.

There are no actual Ford PART numbers marked on any parts after 1956, only ID numbers...when applicable.

1968/72 429/460 main bearings, except CJ; SC/J; P/C, & Boss 429:

4) C8SZ6333A .. Upper Main Bearings // 4) C8SZ6333B .. Lower Main Bearings // 2) C9AZ6337G .. Upper/Lower Thrust Main Bearings =

Standard RED: .0956"

1973/79: The main bearing sizes are not listed in the Car & Truck parts catalogs, and the part numbers are different.

OK, now I get it. To repeat NumberDummy:

standard wall is 0.0955-0.0960

0.002 undersize would be 0.0965-0.0970

hey guys thx for the info but now i'm confused so i went to a napa store and mic a set of std bearings and they were the same as what u guys said, so i mic mine and they are 0.09950. so i called a local machine shop and told him what i was doing and told him the numbers off of my main bearings and theres a little black ink mark thats 010 so he's saying that my bearings are only .0010 over but i think that they are .0040 over because std bearings are 0.0955 and mine are 0.0995 so that would =0.0040 right???

thx for all your help guys

Why not just mic the crank ? Then you will know if it's std or not.
