I'm looking for a good machine shop in the Memphis area to help with my FE 410 buildup (conversion of the 360 that came in my '69 F100). Can anyone make any recommendations? A shop with FE experience would be a big plus.
I use to live in memphis and there was a machine shop
downtown on front street. It may not be there now but
those guys were famous for the work they did. Sorry I
can't remember address or exact name. Sun something rings a
bell. If I remember,I'll post it. maybe you can find it in the
yellow pages. Good Luck
Well, I think (hope) I found one. I called a couple of places, and they all said that "Boyce" at Performance Specialties was the guy to talk to. He's got a shop over off Watkins in North Memphis. I called him, and he sure sounded like he knew his FE's, so I drove over to the shop. I was blown away! I nearly tripped over a set of 427 tunnel port heads when I walked in. He had two different FE's - a 390 and a 428 - on stands being assembled. He checked out the heads, crank and rods that I had brought with me, and quoted me about $400 total to get them all ready. That includes new valve guides, competition valve job, hardened exhaust valve seats, prepping the rods, turning the crank, etc. I'm probably going to have another $200 in block work and $200 in balancing and miscellanous work by the time I'm done with Boyce's services, so I sure hope his work is as good as his talk. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.
I do know that when I built up a 351 in southern Cal one year I blew about $1300 before the tab was all toted up - and that was without balancing anything.
I'll be watching the outcome of all of this for sure!
