Hi all,
Ive noticed(since I got the truck actually) that there is alot of carbon buildup on the exhaust pipe outlet. The truck runs fine, and no CEL.
Ive noticed on a few friends trucks(Ford of course) and close to the same year model that theirs are clean and shiny.
Theirs are the V-8 engines while mine is the 4.2 automatic.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue, and should I be concerned. Im averaging around 19 mpg combined. My main concern is that this cant be good for the converter....
Lastly....Ive been running regular fuel in it,and its 10% ethanol,Last tank I put some Shell Premium in it just to see if it made any difference...It didnt, and im still averaging around 400 miles per tank.
This is on an 07 F-150 XL,Regular cab,Automatic.
Don't worry about it. Tail pipes are not going to stay nice and shiny inside.
Yeah..Ive considered that, but there are two guys at work with V-8 F-150s and both are pristeen...I suspect they both drive like me(an old fart) and the difference is QUITE noticeable.
There was a stick on decal with I believe SFC on the cab.. when I bought the truck...This originally lead me to think the previous owner had a "chip" or some mod to beef up the 4.2...I later read that there were no "performance mods" computer wise for the 4.2.
Just wondering if the P/O did indeed have something done...and ultimately how do I "undo" it if he did.
Ive also heard something about disconnecting the batterey for about 30 minutes to make the computer(tranny and engine) go back to square one..Supposedly this truck has an "adaptive transmission" which supposedly programs itself to the driving habits of the Pilot....curious!
n5926g,
this is very normal for our trucks. I have the same engine and trans as you and I have "the black tailpipe" as well. There is nothing to worry about. My truck is chipped and I have done some other stuff to it and it was that way before i did the mods. For reference my brother has the exact same truck (bone stock) and he has a "black tailpipe" as well. There is nothing to worry about....you could always wash it if it makes you feel better.hahaha

Well... I guess its okay then.Just hacks me off when MY 07 is the newest in the parking lot,and its pristeen other than that black crap...Thanks guys! as usual ive found out what I needed to know.
I took my 08 FX2 to have this checked earlier this week and the Dealer found lots of issues with vacuum leaks, PCM codes, Throttle Body and my truck did not have a CEL. Glad they found issues. Truck runs a lot better now. Will need to clean the tailpipe to see what it looks like next week/month...
Take it in!
