"pinging" 4.2

Hi Guys,
Ive noticed lately that my 07 with the 4.2 is pinging under acceleration. This doesent happen all the time, but im noticing it more often.
My first thought would be fuel, and Ive run a tank of Premium(with no ethanol) through it,and no difference.Ive also posted an earlier thread concerning (what I think ) is an excessive carbon buildup on the exhaust outlet.
Ive been reading about defective converters on other posts, and while I have no CEL,Im wondering if there is any connection between the pinging, carbon duildup, and possibly a converter issue.
The truck starts, and runs fine, but something just doesent "feel" right...Am I worrying about nothing?
As always...suggestions appreciated Miles on the clock...38,000

Update:...just tried my OBDII reader on the truck, and it came up with an error message...Thought these were OBDII systems....what gives on THAT?

I've had some mild pinging under moderate load and some towing. Mostly with the BP 87 with Invigorate, I prefer the Sunoco or the no-name at my corner where he buy mostly Exxon or Gulf, with those no pinging. As soon as I go back to the recommended BP it's prone to pinging and les MPG????? My son uses only BP87 from a different station in his and never has trouble, so my theory would be try some other gas and also get that buildup checked out because that could be a problem, maybe a sensor not working right creating trouble.
