I test drove an '03 6.0 PSD last week. I hopped in and fired up the truck then set about looking at all the neat stuff inside. I am letting the truck warm up a bit before I hit the road.
Well, the truck was parked between a couple of other trucks to the PSDs front and rear so I had to jocky the truck around to get it out. The PSD was nice an quiet at idle, but as soon as I touched the gas (diesel?) pedal (ha ha) the truck got much noisier.
Have you 6.0 guys noticed this? Have you asked about it?
My brother is an engineer at Cummins so I asked him about it. He told me that to get a diesel, any diesel to run quieter, they go to pilot injection. Basically they program the 'puter to do an injection at some point before optimal and then one at optimal timing. So say optimal is at -10deg before top dead center, they would have an injection at say -15deg BTDC. That charge would cool the cylinder and lower emissions (the main reason for pilot injection).
That being said, the big difference in the three light truck oil burners is the point at which the engine switches from pilot injection to regular injection. Apparently Ford (Harvester) has theirs set to change just off idle. C@#$y and D#&^e (cummins) have thiers at some other point. (I don't care where theirs is - I won't drive either).
What is your experience with this idle change?
Big
PS I am looking at buying an 04 F350 CC LB PSD in the next week. Just curious what you all have noticed.
I've noticed the same thing in my PSD. (See Sig) Anywho, I don't mind it. I look at it this way, it's a Diesel. I love the noise. Pisses the neighbors! lol
This is what the Oct flash got rid of on the 03s. The 04s are apparently able to handle it so they get to keep pilot injection. Helps alot at drivethroughs.
I really don't mind the noise at all. I was just wondering if that is what everyone is experiencing. My brother (the Cummins engineer) says that a ton of Ford owners are pretty upset at that peculiarity. I don't know too many 6.0 owners personnaly, so I came here.
Any idea what the diff is beteween the 04 and 03 that would allow for the 04 engine to handle the Oct flash? IS the much talked about "April Flash" going to address the noise issues? (not that its a BIG issue)

As far as I know the 04/04s don't get the flash. I believe its because there are too many hardware changes between the two. The reason they got rid of pilot injection on the 03s (oct-reflash) was because of all the poor idle issues. The 04/04s got a larger capacity wavy oil rail which smoothed out oil pressure fluctuation which in turn dealt with the idle issues, so, it keeps the pilot injection, which is why its quieter than Oct flash 03s (pilot injection disabled).
