Serious steering anomaly

When driving my '08 Job#1 CC and going down the road, it feels as if the steering has too much slack. I have new tires, but it was happening before too. Its like there's excessive play in the steering box. My alignment is right on, my Michelins have less than 3000 miles on them. Its not a pulling to one side or the other feeling rather than I cant keep the steering wheel in one position and go straight. The slightest adjustment will either cause it to go left or right. It's frustrating because I constantly have to be careful. I was even pulled over once because the trooper thought I was drunk. Could this be a known problem? Anyone else have this? I know there's a TSB on the E series vans but havent found one for the F series. Also, would this be a warranty repair if something was wrong? Thanks in advance

I had a similar issue and had my front end shop "tighten" the steering gear. I believe the factory/dealer leaves X amount of play in the steering gear for whatever reason. When I took it to my front end specialist he told me that you can make an adjustment that takes out some of that play, but to be careful not to overtighen because there are negative consequences to doing so (ie. wear issues). I believe that it's not easy to get to either, I don't recall but they either had to drop the steering box or loosen it to get to this adjustment bolt.

Good luck, hope that helps.

Thanks jalanis, I appreciate your advice. Im hoping more will chime in and see if this is a common problem or not? Also, Im afraid if anyone other than Ford did the work, especially in my little town, Id turn the wheel left and go right. Thanks again

bumper to bumper have the dealer look at it, or you may need to put a better steering stabilizer on it to give you some more resistance.

But I would have the dealer check it out first.

Ditto 69cj & Senix. Let Ford handle it if still warranteed. Even if it's not under warranty anymore, I'd let Ford fix it. Dealer fees I've seen are really no worse than other auto repair shops. Unless of course you have a good shop nearby that you can trust.....

I would take the truck to the dealership....I had my steering box replaced because of excessive play...it was a issue. I had maybe 30k miles on the truck...The issue with the steering box ..somewhat common...stock tires and wheels

The problem is Im out of my 36000 warranty. It just started doing this about 800 miles ago. Isn't there a suspension or other warranty that might help with the cost? Ive just had surgery and money is tight. I cant afford to have something like this fixed if I have to pay for it all. Anyone?

Good luck, if I hear you on the cost, but FWIW it wasn't very expense to have the shop make that adjustment to the steering box.

On another note, I noticed you're running Michelin's from your gallery. Sending you a PM with some questions.

Thanks.

Thanks jlanas. I guess I'm going to be taking her in, I have too much invested in tires alone to have a suspension problem. It acts like my old 66 Chevy ( yes I hated to admit that but I was young and dumb ) where you could reach down with a screwdriver and tighten up the play in the steering box. Im sure its a cab off the way my luck is. Thanks for all the great suggestions and advice. You guys are the best.
