I'm trying to plan a short camping trip next weekend, and I'm either going to my "usual" fishing hole campgound if the weather is good or the coast if it's going to be rainy.
Why give up some good 'ole fishing for going to the coast you ask, especially in Oregon, where it's sure to rain on the coast? Sand of course!
If I go to the coast, it'll be Sand Lake, as they have a decent campground to stay in, some dunes to drive on, and Pelican Brewery in Pacific City isn't too far away. Besides, the dog likes the beach over fishing because he actually gets to get out and run and I like the sand in bad weather because I don't have to get out of the truck and get soaked!
So my question is, is there any decent place to mount the typical orange safety flag on our trucks? It's required to drive on the dunes at Sand Lake, and I have a couple flags, but I don't know where to mount one on our trucks. When I used to take my Tacoma out, I had a cheap brush guard that I could mount the flag to one of the driving light brackets, but I don't have any such thing on the F-250. I suppose I could use my hitch ball mount, but that makes it hard to open the tailgate and let the dog out when I'm out there. Any suggestions?
What kinda mirrors ya got? If you have either the RV or Tow mirrors you can use a CB antenna mount on the mirror arm. Lotsa different options for a CB mount, there are hood/trunk mounts that clamp over the edge, mounts that clamp on the rain gutter. If you use a mirror mount and fasten it to a pair of vise grips you can clamp it to the bumper or bed rail. You could make a mount that fits in the stake pocket on the bed or something that fits in the front corner of the bed. With over 30 years driving a semi I've used a bunch of different antenna mounts and I spent a lot of time playing in the dunes at Glamis so I've had a few different flag mounts. It's been a few years since I've been on the sand and I can't remember the required height but unless you can get away with a short whip a magnetic mount will not work, if you need to be real tall or light the top of it the base will just tip over or slide.
Yeah, I do have a camper shell, so that kind of limits the mounting locations. Sand Lake requires flags to be displayed 9 feet off the ground, so I think a ball mount would get it just high enough. In fact, my trailer receiver has a small hole right next to the trailer ball that is designed to attach an anti-sway device (which I don't have), so that might work perfect.
I do have the extendable tow mirrors, and I thought these might be a good location to mount a flag. The previous owner used to have a CB in the truck with fender-mount antenna bracket, and since I wouldn't mind reinstalling a CB at some point, this could be a good option, too.
I just wish there were more truck accessory stores near here. About the only place around I can think of to look for antenna mounts is Radio Shack...
I built a bracket that I bolt to the bottom of the bumper. There are a few holes in the bottom inner flange of the bumper that I use. Here is a picture of it mounted but no detail of the mount in the pic.
