speedometer wont go over 40mph

I have a 99 f-350 4x4 auto powerstroke

My abs light was on and the speedo wasnt working till i hit over 40mph, well yesterday i was driving and it wont go over 40 mph.

So I replaced the sensor in the Rear Diff, and now the speedo works fine untill I get to 40MPH and it wont go any higher.

Any ideas?

This is driving me crazy

Don't know how this helps yea, but i looked it up.. But my book says.

Inaccurate speedometer reading

--Instrument cluster. (odometer functions correctly (except Motorhome)
--GEM.
--Tires.
--AbS sensor

Are you going over 40 when it doesn't register? What does the tach do? Is it shifting OK? Is you OD off(if it has one)?

as I am accelerating the speedo moves right along and as soon as it gets to 40, it stops but the truck get up to speed, and the tach is working fine. As for the overdrive I haven't checked.

The truck run's great and shifts fine. No issues except this.

the abs light was on but that went away when i replaced the sensor

This might be way out there but could the VSS or the other speed sensor on the transmission have any hing to do with it?/

I know you already replaced the ABS on the diff. but you might want to pull it again and inspect it for little metal pieces or replace it again w one from the DEALER. I bought one from NAPA that was bad after just a few days.

The other sensors that are located ON the trans are the INPUT and OUTPUT speed sensors. Seems no one has here ever had a reason to replace these.
I 'll replace mine soon just because I figure 10 years, 168k miles I've HAD to replace the ABS sensor, the ICP sensor, the EBP sensor and tube, and the cam position sensor, Hpop orings, shocks, and the all boots, things wear out.

the wired thing is the speedo wasnt working at all until you got to 40mph, and then it stopped working once it hit 40.when I replaced the abs sensor, the speedo worked fine until it hit 40 and then it is stuck.

I will take your advise ad take it out and check it.

the speed sensor on top of the trans, would that cause it not to work over 40mph? I read some where that that sensor also helps with the shift points, and my truck shifts just fine

Does the needle stay at 40 when the truck is still?

How about when the truck is off?

no the needle goes down when you slow below 40 and works fine between 0 and 40mph

IIRC there was a tsb out about "erratic, inop, sticking" speedo.needles.
I think the graphic on the cluster would start to come loose and stop,(interfere) needle movement.

But I don't remeber what years it was for.

Any chance something like that is happening?
If you "tap" on the cluster face at 40 mph, will the needle move on?

Might be a stretch,I will try to find the tsb.

Here's another straw, whats the odometer doing all this time? Is it mechanical or electric? try punching the reset button a couple times while its on 40.
