If you want the truck to sound phenomenal,>> put a magnaflow near the cat location, half the pipe and a side dump just front of the rear tires .
Who out there's done this?... anyone??... Beuler?
Doesn't the sound vary between model years? My '03 is straight piped with 4" exhaust and has a super high pitch whistle with a good little rumble to it, but I have to really get on the gas to make it start to pop. I had an '04 with the same exact exhaust setup, and the whistle was lower pitched, but the exhaust popped like crazy if you just tried to keep up with the car next to you taking off from a redlight. Then, my friend has an '06 that is straight piped with the factory size exhaust, and when his turbo spools up it has a very strange sound to it. It almost sounds like a supercharger winding up at full throttle. But as far as the V8 sound, it's very similar to my '03.
As far as being annoying, my truck now doesn't make enough noise at low speeds to annoy anyone in my neighborhood, and if I'm coming home real late at night I just try and let it idle through the neighborhood. I loved my '04 though because these annoying people pull up next to me with their "systems" and the bass all rattling my truck and the cars next to me (I know it had to annoy people other than myself) so I would just get up next to them and get on the gas a little bit and the exhaust would pop against the side of their car and I know it had to blast their eardrums. That truck was so bad I almost ran a lady off the road because the pop echoed off the side of her car so bad that it scared her pretty bad.
I enjoy it, but then again...I'm 21 and from the south. Gotta love the lenient southern states with no emission laws Hell, we're even trying to do away with our gun laws!
andeyhall thats funny stuff right there. I remember one time I was driving my old car and the guy next to me at the light had a lifted 6.0 where the exhaust was like right at my head and he stomped on it and I almost went deaf. It was awesome! haha
Installed MBPR 4" turback last night. PITA removing the old one and I think the worst was getting the OEM exhaust supports off the exhaust in a re-useable condition. Once all was removed the installation of the new was easy. I can't say the sound is much different and am going to straight pipe it. I bought P/N#6212409. I had the original pipe that I knocked the CAT out of and already had some turbo whine. Good to know- I have an F-350 super or ext. cab. There is a section of pipe that is not used in the kit and once 2" is cut-off and then flared, the resonator can be removed and re-installed with ease. This piece of pipe replaces the resonator by just loosening a couple clamps.

That varies a little bit between vehicles and if you are running a tuner or not. ~200 degrees isn't far fetch if you go with a 4" system straight-piped.
As to sound with no muffler, on my it wasn't really all that much of improvement, although I have to say this, I have blown my eardrums out in my youth running Dio songs a little too loud.
My truck is straight piped, with a 4in pipe and a 6in tip. I dont really like what it sounds like at the idle, the whistle is super loud (especially when it revs itself).. it honestly sounds like a jet plane. But I do like the sound of it when you really get on it.
I'm in Washington State, and many many people have their trucks straight piped around here and I've never heard of anyone having problems with it?
Plus I've been pulled over twice, with the truck still running, and neither cop said anything about it.

The odds are probably low, even in states that I travel most of the time too, the odds are lower then others. However, don't confuse that with it not being illegal to do so. I see a lot of people just mentioning that if you have emissions don't do it, but that doesn't mean that it's legal if you don't have emissions testing.
Tex notes a good distinction that I too feel some may overlook
It's another federal law with upward of a $10,000 fine for tampering with emission equipment AND I wouldn't put it past some dealers to try to void warranty if tampered with - I'm just saying
And honestly to what end ? proven MINIMAL difference in performance...

yes it does vary. The '03 to early '04 has a different turbo which will makes it real whiner.
