Good morning guys.
Am I the only one have problems getting the FTE site to load.
I have problems since last night.
It is saying the site is taking to long to lode and is timing out.
That looks like a Rockler product....(?)
The saw edged Forstner bits are usually high quality enough to leave smooth edges, Most larger sizes have them because a continuous rim would produce too much friction and then start to swell in the hole.
(Ever wonder why large hole saws bind so badly? They are expanding in the hole due to the heat they create. Their large diameter means that even at slow rpm's the speed at the cutting edge is high)
I believe you're thinking of a plumbers Self-Feed bit. And you're right, these will produce some tearout, especially on the exit side.
The lead screw also makes it difficult to control the depth unless your drill has a brake.
But a forstner style bit has a spur and not a screw at it's center.....

I need to mill a 2" diameter shallow hole into a plank.
This plank is between the upper & lower panels of a bi-fold door.
I need to cut this hole to accept a flush ring pull plate as the ring pull is going on the interior of a bi-fold door at the center hinge joint.
This is the bit I'm thinking about.
Seems it will cut without the need for the push of a drill press.
I understand that the saw style Forstner bits rip up the edges of the hole.
