is there anyway to detect a boost leak with out buying a boost leak detector?? i have to have one somewhere my truck just isnt spooling like it should..and i get a wiff of diesel in the cab once in a while..
Wiff of diesel in the cab... Start with the up pipes. Look for black soot around the top of the pipe where they enter the collector. A little mirror and a flash light helps with this. Make sure all the IC boots are tight. Take a look a the turbine wheel as well. Should have nice clean sharp edges. Got a clean air filter?
its just wierd i just put a wicked wheel in and me n my dad 99.5 are identical except i have an afe stage 2 intake and his is a stock one and it still spools ans whistles louder than mine..i guess i'm going to have to buy the boost leak detector..

Izzy has pictures of how to build one. But I would focus on your up-pipes because your not going to get fumes from a intake boost leak.
Here's a 3" PVC cap drilled & tapped for an air nipple. All it takes is a 7/16ths drill bit, 1/4 NPT tap, and some teflon tape around the nipple. You might want to scuff up or put a couple small screws around the edge of the cap to give the intake something to bite into so it doesn't fly off... It's amazing how much force just 20-25psi puts on that thing.
The spools faster/sounds louder, which are pretty subjective, are on the drive side of the boost, which you will not be able to see with a leak detector. The leak detector will only showl leaks past the turbine. If your uppies are good - check the other things that make boost - turbine wheel condition, air filter restriction. Are you getting coal to the fire? fuel filter, fuel pressure.
Do you have a Boost gage? What sort of readings are you seeing...
Are you really sure you have a problem, or is it just that it seems different than your pop's truck. Different intakes make different sounds, and sound is hugely subjective.
