I am going to get a new scope for my remington 870 slug gun. I don't want to spend a small fortune getting it sighted in,and am thinking about getting a bore sighter to make it easier. I have never used one before, can someone recommend a user friendly one that won't break the bank? I have seen the ones at cabela's that look like a shotgun shell and shine a red light down the barrel, will this work? http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...exId=cat200006 I am not going to be using it very much,so i don't see the need to spend over $200 on one that doesn't see much use. thanks for the advice!!
In all my years of shooting, I've never used a boresighter to get onto a target.
When I can see through the bore, I've put a 'dot' on the wall and centered the bore on that dot, then, aligned the scope to match the 'dot'.
First shot (at 25 yards) is pretty darned close. Getting 'on the bullseye' at 25 yards, will normally put you (with a rifle) about 1-1/2 to 2" high at 100 yards.
I'm not so sure with a slug gun. (Arcs like a rainbow or an artillary round!!!)
I've been doing that routine for over 30 years, I suppose.
If I can see down the bore, a small mirror works (like a dentist's mirror).

sounds like a good idea, but how would i do that on my 870 shotgun since I can't remove the bolt and look down the barrel like a rifle?

Option 1. - On the 870, rack the slide back, and leave the bolt open.
Use a small mirror to see down the barrel.
Option 2. - On the 870, IF the scope is barrel mounted (cantilever mount), remove the barrel and scope and place in a padded vise. Proceed as described in my first post.
Like Keith said, Use a small mirror in the chamber.............Some are available from gunshops that have a small light as a part of the mirror, and are made specifically for this application. A good rest is essential for this too, wobbling around and trying to boresight are frustrating as ****!
