ive had the same problem that a lot of others have had on the forum, wipers dont work except on high, but sometimes if i bang the dash then magically they will start working. so i removed the module from under the dash and took it apart. the posts that i have read said that i need to just re-solder some of the joints and i should be good as new. i did re solder the 2 joints that looked the worst, and they still look bad with the resin but are solid. where else should i look to fix up
I do not see what model year your truck is, but if it is a 92+, there is a good possibility that the problem lies in the multi-function switch on the column. Good replacements are available in the aftermarket but if, as I suspect from what you have already tried, you are a hands-on type then you can many times rehab your current switch assembly by cleaning and repunching the dimpled contact areas (if excessively worn) of the plates within the switch. Be sure to recoat them with an appropriate dielectric grease before reassembly. I have rebuilt the switch assemblies in several of my vehicles through the years and had good results.
my truck does have intermittent wipers. i have replaced the switch and the motor. ford want $150 for a new wiper module so im trying to repair this myself. if i hold the module in my hand and give it a light tap, the wipers come to life. surely there is just a bad connection somewhere on the board
+1 one getting your parts from Millennium Ford - Ed is a great guy to work with, and he will go the extra mile to help ya find a part that is obsolete and there are very few of them left in random dealerships - we just got a last fuel sender in the country from him like that (it wasn't for a truck tho).
Doesn't look like the solder is sticking to the leads of the Orange colored capacitor.
Use a razor blade and scrape the leads then try resoldering them to the circuit board.
Sorry I missed that the model was pre '92 (I only checked for a Gallery). If you have loose solder joints, you may need to use some desoldering braid and appropriate acid to clean the joint before attempting a total resolder.
Should you need to go "shopping" at a salvage yard, do not rule out a number of mid 1970's passenger cars that also used the rotary type switch. Some years ago I added intermittent wipers to a 1980s F-Series using components from a 1977ish Thunderbird or Cougar. Our comprades in the E-Series Forums should likewise consider a similar upgrade using components from several years' of 1970's LTD or Grand Marquis models; an upgrade I also performed earlier on my 1976 E350.
It is also possible for some of the contacts in the wiper motor itself to need some of the same type of treatment noted in my earlier post.
