I've done it a few times with other vehicles, but thought I'd confer with the XPERTS before I mess sumthin up. Do you guys see a problem with using the 4x4 to get around while I have the rear driveshaft assembly off to have rebuilt?
Just dont flog it too hard. Drive normal, and nice. The front joints are 1350 series joints, and you also have u joints at the wheels aswell. While normal driving should not affect them, excessively running it hard, will put additional wear on those joints IMO. I have front drove around before while getting my rear driveshaft balanced. Just dont beat on it.
Unfortunately, 1 thing has led to another...although I have a backup camera, I failed to use it and upon leaving the driveline shop, I not only failed to close the tailgate, but then proceeded to back into their sign. The concrete and pavement kept the sign upright, but my tailgate didn't fair so well :-0 The worse part, I didn't realize that I hadn't closed the tailgate (nor the camper $400 glass window) nor that it was the tailgate and not the rear bumper (has happened a few times before, hence the backup camera) that hit the sign pole, until I was 16 miles down the highway when I noticed the window was open in the rear window. ;-#
I may be losing it.
Now I'm in search of a tailgate that doesn't cost an arm-leg.
I actually did that myself once. I just took off the cover on the inside of the tailgate, and beat it all out. Then put the cover back on. No big deal bro.
Yeah, I thought of pounding it out...but everyone who has seen it agrees that doing so isn't possible, at least not to the point of looking "decent" and latching...
There are a couple on ebay, none in red, but you could get them painted, or keep looking. Maybe some of the folks who got 08+ tailgates might also have their old one laying around.
Whatever you do... and this goes for anything... STAY AWAY FROM PERSHING AUTO BODY on ebay... They have horrible customer service, and their parts are very thin and poorly assembled... On a side note, a new tailgate from Ford was around $250 and the paint wasn't too badly priced, although I painted it myself...
