On another note, doesn't a 550 rpm idle sound a little low for a 460?

I think you should opt for a new carb, as it has been said unless your talented in the tuning of carbs that rochester wont be worth much to you except headache. Holley, Edelbrock, whatever. I can say I use Edelbrocks, simple to tune, easy to maintain, but you lose a little power, however with how your truck is running now I think ANYTHING will give you a more efficient powerful engine.

550 rpms in drive is fine unless you have a cam above 270d thats actually what the manual calls for if i remember correctly,

demon 750 is what i have on my truck, there a great carb, essentially a hopped up holley

q-jets are very difficult to tune, some people complain about holleys but q-jets are a real clusterclap

you also need some good size headers and make sure your cam matches the rest of the engine. oh and make sure you dont have grand canyon pistons!lol

The Carb has a manual choke that I put on, The primary piston seems to have a good bit of spring tension on it. I pop it down, and it pops right back up. My brakes are easy to push so I don't think it is a vacuum leak, but I could be wrong.

You can't base a vacuum leak on your brake pedal. Hook up a vacuum gauge.

When you buy a gauge you will see. They are color coded, and state where normal is and low vacuum. They are cheap and worth their weight in gold.

your vac reading wont tell you you have a leak, it just tells you that you have problem.

a good reading with a stock cam would be 18hg at the manifold, as you add lift and duration this number gets lower

the best way to find a vac leak is trace all your vac lines and check to see if you have leaks.

The very best way is to plug the vacuum fitting at the engine or cap it off before it gets to the tree and see what happens when nothing is pulling vacuum except the carb and dizzy advance.
