I think you should opt for a new carb, as it has been said unless your talented in the tuning of carbs that rochester wont be worth much to you except headache. Holley, Edelbrock, whatever. I can say I use Edelbrocks, simple to tune, easy to maintain, but you lose a little power, however with how your truck is running now I think ANYTHING will give you a more efficient powerful engine.
The Carb has a manual choke that I put on, The primary piston seems to have a good bit of spring tension on it. I pop it down, and it pops right back up. My brakes are easy to push so I don't think it is a vacuum leak, but I could be wrong.
The very best way is to plug the vacuum fitting at the engine or cap it off before it gets to the tree and see what happens when nothing is pulling vacuum except the carb and dizzy advance.
