Do the license plate mounted ones not work well for hooking up trailers ?
Yes, they do, they work really good, thats what I use. Its right over the ball andyou can easily see, especially with my wide angle view from camera, I bought it from Ebay for 99.00. And it comes with IR LEDs for nightvision.
Does anybody any experience with a gps/navigation unit that has a integrated wireless backup camera? I have a the OEM backup camera on my 08 F150 and it makes backing up to the toyhauler easy. We just got an 05 Excursion this past weekend and I read the post in regards to the backup camera from Sams. After doing some searching I found these units that also incorporate a gps.
I have a Pioneer F90BT with the rear view camera option, and that is what I use. It comes with Navigation and rear camera, as well as access to HD radio, Sirius/XM, and Ipod.
I will try and grab a picture of my hitch and trailer hookup next time I connect it. you will see the angle I have has a big advantage over the one in the previous pic.
Well it's good to see how many people are willing to get together and help. I'm new to the site but thanks for all the help. I'm glad there was someone with direct knowledge of what I was looking at to save me from blowing $400 on something that I would hate. Now I can use all of your experiences to make the best approach.
Wifey saw the links to the Navigation/radio/cd/backup cameras and got pretty excited. Personally I liked the monitor built into the rear view camera to keep it stealth, out of site and out of mind for criminals.
Now for a new question. If I do go the combo route are their units that are easily removable for the user, NOT the criminal? OR, has anyone had ingenious ideas to do stealth installs? I like the idea of a criminal looking inside and seeing a stock stereo and interior, especially since any Ford with the door keypad can be entered in seconds.

No doubt! Without seeing a pic, I'm betting the angle allows you to better see when the hitch is over the ball, yes?
There are companies that make generic looking stock radio covers to go over your expensive navigation if you want. Or you can also make one using the stock radio. Would take some time, but the other option is to purchase one for fairly cheap....

I also have a pioneer unit. Which camera did you end up using with it?
As promised, here is the picture of the hitch via backup camera mounted in the rear hatch housing. its fricken' cold out this AM so its a bit fogged up but you get the idea
I saw that Advanced Auto has the Peak Wireless Backup Cameras on sale for $49. I picked one up tonight, will do the install this weekend.

Works awesome and as stated right over the ball. It is perfectly on. The bad thing is that you have to have a Head unit that is backup camera ready, which I did have being my Pioneer F90.

I have been using the Garmin Nuvi 5000 with the integrated video feed. I found a WIRED Audiovox brand camera on Amazon with the reverse image and used that on a license plate mount. It works great there. The only gripe I have is the boot time of the Garmin when first starting up. It takes about 45 seconds or so before the backup feed is available. No biggy, just not instant.
